GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position consists of proactive enforcement and investigation of criminal organizations, street level crimes, narcotics, prostitution, and gangs within Prince William County. Person(s) selected may be assigned to any investigative unit within SIB (Narcotics Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Gang Unit), as determined by the Division Commander.
DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT: Initial assignment of 4 years.
RANK: Police Officer/Detective PD01 and Master Police Officer PD02. Must not be on probation as of the closing date.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of police investigative principles and techniques; general knowledge of the rules of evidence and the laws of search and seizure; ability to analyze evidence; ability to question and interview skillfully; ability to organize and prepare clear and concise reports, records, and files. General understanding of planning police operations, ability to identify and mitigate risk during police operations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to be on-call and available on a 24-hour basis. Ability to pass an FBI or Federal Agency background investigation. Willingness to participate in frequent regional travel, and occasional out of state travel.

SELECTION PROCESS: All those requesting consideration for appointment as a detective in SIB must submit a letter of interest at this time. Candidates should outline their qualifications in their written request for the position, to include training and work experience.
Interviews will be conducted with the candidates. During the interview, the candidates will be permitted to speak to their qualifications and interest in the position/bureau, as well as allow members to ask questions relevant to the position being sought. The interview will serve as an opportunity to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates.
In addition to the above, the successful candidate will be selected based on such factors as performance evaluations, supervisor recommendations, training, experience, and demonstrated interest in the position. Seniority will also be considered.
The Criminal Investigation Division Commander, in consultation with the Deputy CID Commanders and the Special Investigations Bureau Commander, will forward his or her recommendations to the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police shall make the final selection. The eligibility list will be valid for a one-year period. As positions become available, eligible candidates will be considered and a selection made at that time. The names of those not selected will remain on the eligibility list until the one-year period ends.
