Problem Based Learning Facilitator - Year 2
The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Curriculum at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking an experienced faculty to facilitate small groups of 7-8 students as they learn medicine using clinical cases as a structure for learning. This job offers salary support of 0.3 FTE from the medical school for a qualified DO or MD faculty. The qualified candidate will hold an academic title. Faculty rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor is pending review and recommendation made by the Faculty Affairs Committee.
Expectations:
Teach one PBL group every week July – May for 3 half-days per week, typically 3 hours each Monday-Wednesday-Friday morning.
Prep time 2-3 hours per week to review case in advance.
Write student evaluations using template provided for formative mid-block and summative at the end of each block.
May-June: continued 0.3 FTE commitment for case review, case-writing, case-enhancement, item writing for exams, faculty development, medical education research on PBL (schedule can be more flexible)
Faculty should be fully committed to learning how to facilitate problem-based learning, which includes participating in training for PBL and ongoing faculty development programs provided.
Clinical faculty should review pertinent basic science information and clinical information to prepare for the facilitation. While your role is not to “teach” the students during the group sessions, you will need to know the content of the cases to help facilitate the students from getting off-track into unnecessary tangents. You are not expected to be expert in all content of the case.
Whenever possible, vacations should be scheduled during the students’ time off in the winter, spring and summer. When you have conferences or vacation, prior notification will be required so that a substitute can be provided for your group.
Qualifications:
DO or MD degree with clinical experience.
Experience with teaching medical students. Small group facilitation is preferred. Problem-based Learning experienced is strongly favored.
Available Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings during academic year (beginning of July to end of May), with more flexibility in summer.
