JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
REPORTS TO: Director of Pupil Personnel Services
FUNCTION: To improve the academic achievement of students and assist in other school activities as assigned.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Instruct students in the curricula in the various school subjects in accordance with the principals and policies of the District Board and provisions of the Education Code and the Rules and Regulations of the State Board of Education.
2. Assesses and analyzes student academic performance, uses a variety of techniques, and monitors and adjusts teaching strategies in order to meet needs of each student.
3. Is a member of the Individual Educational Planning Team and is a key participant in the development and implementation of each student’s individualized education plan (IEP).
4. Develops and teaches from appropriate teaching materials and textbooks to work toward achievement of IEP goals.
5. Collaborates with general education teachers to provide individually tailored programs from research-based interventions that will enhance and strengthen skills of both exceptional individuals and regular education individuals in the regular education classroom utilizing and coordinating all available resources.
6. Provides consultation services to teachers and student study teams. Consultant services will include:
a. Contact with regular classroom teachers to review IEP goals and objectives for students assigned to the classroom.
b. Serve as a member of the school site student study teams and act as a consultant to school site personnel regarding interventions to be attempted prior to referral for special education evaluation.
c. Providing research-based curriculum resources to regular education classroom teachers.
7. When appropriate supply inclusion services in the regular education classroom.
8. Coordinates special education services with regular education teachers in order to provide a successful transition program into regular education.
9. When appropriate coordinates transition services for special education students graduating from high school.
10. Assists the regular education classroom teachers in encouraging acceptance of individuals with exceptional needs by regular education classmates.
11. Supervises all students on the school grounds and in the school buildings.
12. Maintains a safe, secure and healthful room environment to promote social, academic and emotional growth.
13. Communicates with all special education parents regarding each student’s academic and social progress.
14. Assists regular education teachers with communicating with regular education parents regarding student’s academic and social progress at the request of the regular education teacher.
15. Participates in regular classroom parent conferences with the regular education classroom teacher upon request.
16. Provides information and assistance to individuals with exceptional needs and their parents, and assists parents in contributing to the education of their children at home.
17. Provides information and assistance to parents of regular education individuals, and assists parents in contributing to the education of their children at home, when requested by regular education teacher or parent.
18. Maintains proper records, including documentation of student progress, report cards, cumulative records and attendance records.
19. Completes paperwork requirements from the Director of Pupil Personnel Services in a timely and professional manner.
20. Updates professional skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis.
21. Provides, upon request, training to the regular school staff and parents. Such training will include use of research-based interventions, understanding of the exceptional individual, learning and behavior techniques, which will increase student academic performance.
22. Develop career/vocational standards for special education students (i.e., time on task, turning in homework and responsibility) as appropriate.
23. Develop a positive behavior program for special education students that is acceptable and understood by students and their parents.
24. Shall perform other related duties as directed by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
