We are currently seeking an Animal BSL-3 Biologist with the National Institutes of Health in, Maryland.
Scope:
Under this Task Order, the Contractor(s) shall provide services in support of the overall functions of the TB Imaging Program (TBIP), Division of Intramural Research (DIR).
Specific Qualifications:
• AS or BS degree in scientific related field or related certifications such as ALAT, LATg, etc.
• 4 or more years of working experience in a lab/animal facility setting.
• Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
• Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
• Proficient computer skills with spreadsheets and other software to record data.
• In-person work in the BSL-3 laboratory and in ABSL-3 laboratory with NHPs, rabbits, and mice, required.
• Effective and clear communication skills and the ability to work in a high stress environment.
• Ability to work in a team under oversight in ABSL-3 laboratory environments following SOPs.
• Must be able to pass extensive background check and Public Trust 5 clearance
• Willing to work flexible hours, weekend work possible.
Tasks:
• Assist the Federal Task Leader with assessment of the technical capabilities in the conduct of NHP experiments with infectious agents and make recommendations.
• Monitor and recover anesthetized NHPs and rabbits for procedures, including PET/CT scans.
• Assist with providing critical care and intervention of an anesthetized patient, knowing when there is an issue and how to correct it.
• Perform blood draws, catheter placement, intubation, injections, BALs, necropsies and other technical needs in NHPs and rabbits.
• Process blood and tissues according to specific needs of multiple experiments.
• Maintain accurate animal records and documentations associated with technical procedures of the animals.
• Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner.
• Clearly communicate any changes in animals’ health status to facility veterinarian and appropriate team members.
• Run/use centrifuge, CBC machine, Chemistry machine, i-STAT, glucometer, and other equipment and provide results to appropriate scientific personnel. Assist in training TBIP staff in use of this equipment.
• Assist with microbiology assessment of samples collected from research subjects in a BSL-3 environment.
• Advise the Federal Task Leader and others on clinical monitoring of animals.
• Provide feedback on methods and technical procedures to improve upon workflow and results of animal monitoring, where applicable.
• Collect and organize data, performing data analysis and interpretation, and assist in preparing technical reports, manuscripts, summaries, protocols, and inventories.
• Communicate results with the program director, principal investigators, and staff scientists as well as other collaborators as requested.
• Assist with scheduling multiple overlapping experiments with program the Federal Task Leader and other members of the lab and streamline tasks so that multiple experiments with two pathogens can occur within the allotted animal space for old world primates, new world primates, and rabbits.
• Assist with the collaboration of the work assignments of the TBIP program staff including distribution of responsibilities among team members so that all work gets completed in a timely fashion.
