Under the supervision of the Upward Bound Director, the Pre-College Advisor/Tutor will work with high school students from the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), and Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD). Pre-College Advisors/Tutors will work to prepare students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The primary role of the Pre-College Advisors/Tutors will be to assist students with their academic preparation through tutoring, mentorship, and encouraging student to pursue a postsecondary education.
This position is anticipated to work 6-15 hours a week (Monday – Friday) and at least one (1) Saturday a month. Some evening hours, as required.
*Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.
Essential Duties
Provide academic support at least 2 days a week during after school tutoring sessions (Monday – Thursday 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm) and monthly Saturday Academies (One Saturday a month from 7:00 am – 2:00 pm) in Santa Ana, or Anaheim (depending on site assignment).
Conduct structured small group and one-to-one tutoring sessions in mathematics, science, history, and English during tutoring sessions.
Work collaboratively with Upward Bound Staff to develop plans to improve students’ academic performance.
Promote and recruit students to participate in Upward Bound activities and events.
Assist the Upward Bound Staff with the planning, setup, and execution of program events and activities, including Saturday Academies.
Help supervise and design activities for students during field trips.
Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings, bi-annual trainings, and other trainings as assigned.
Adhere to SAUSD and AUHSD, policies and procedures in regards to contact with students and school personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be available to attend Fall 2024 Training on August 12 – 15, 2024
Ability to tutor students in at least one of the following subject areas: mathematics (algebra I, and/or geometry, and/or algebra II, and/or calculus), science (biology, and/or chemistry, and/or physics), history (world hist, and/or US hist, and/or government), and English.
Must be willing to work a minimum of 5 hours per week.
Experience working with students from diverse economic and social backgrounds.
Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Possess good organizational skills.
Must be able to work independently and take initiative.
Must be reliable, responsible, punctual and self-directed.
Must pass content specific assessment.
Must be available to work Monday - Thursday between 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm at SAUSD Target High Schools, or AUHSD Target High Schools.
Must be available to work one Saturday a month between 7:00 am – 2:00pm at CSUF campus.
Prior tutoring experience in mathematics (algebra I, and/or geometry, and/or algebra II, and/or calculus), science (biology, and/or chemistry, and/or physics) is highly desired.
EDUCATION:
Applicant must be at least a current sophomore student in good academic standing with at least a 2.50 GPA.
