Purpose of Position: To support the needs of the homeless/displaced student and foster care student populations and facilitate their regular attendance and access appropriate education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Acts as a resource to school-based administrators, school counselors, school social workers, teachers, and health services personnel regarding students identified as McKinney-Vento. Interprets and provides guidance on attendance policies and laws and recordkeeping requirements relating to students identified as McKinney-Vento. Conducts training for school staff on laws relating to the McKinney-Vento student population and recommends strategies for supporting the needs of these students.
Implements case management services (including individual counseling). Monitors student and family progress and status. Makes referrals to other professional staff members or community agencies as needed.
Serves as a liaison between schools and agencies and facilities such as homeless shelters, social services, court services, and the police department to coordinate assistance for homeless/displaced and foster care students. Participates and coordinates the participation of district staff in the scheduled Best Interest Determination meetings for Foster Care students to ensure timely and accurate placement of students.
Collaborates with school staff to develop interventions for students identified as McKinney-Vento and those in foster care.
Assesses students identified as McKinney-Vento and makes visits to living areas/shelters to assess the family environment. Coordinates with the individual building points of contact for identified McKinney-Vento students.
Provides families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating about available services.
Maintains current knowledge of all legal requirements for providing services to students identified as McKinney-Vento through professional development and review of updates and information provided through the state and federal Departments of Education. Monitors compliance with all laws, regulations, guidelines, District policy and procedures related to students identified as McKinney-Vento. Maintains annual data entry and compliance with PDE McKinney-Vento reporting.
Coordinates with Student Services Enrollment Center on students identified as McKinney-Vento and Foster Care and coordinates their educational placements in and out of the district, as needed. Coordinates with Transportation Coordinator and the Director of Student Services regarding transportation services for McKinney-Vento and Foster Care Students.
Facilitates district’s weekend food program, to include monitoring and ordering food. Conducts annual trainings for school district staff on Federal laws relating to McKinney-Vento and Foster Care student population.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Bachelor Degree required, Masters Degree preferred in a related field;
Experience - minimum 3-5 years preferred; prior and relevant experience, and proven knowledge of in a related field; prior School Social Work as plus
Ability to communicate effectively, to organize tasks, to handle multiple tasks, and to exercise good judgment.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions, to read and write, to communicate effectively, to organize tasks, to handle multiple tasks, and to exercise good judgment.
Ability to exercise judgment for when to act independently and when to refer situations to a supervisor.
Ability to work flexible hours and schedules.
