TEACHER JOB OPENING TEACHER OF THE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING OFFICE OF SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing shall report directly to the Director of Speech, Language, Hearing, & OT Services and facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students who have hearing loss. Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing assumes responsibility for planning, coordinating, and implementing programs and services designed to address the unique needs of children identified as deaf or hard of hearing. The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing shall observe, consult, and assist with educational staff members as they adapt classroom instructional strategies to meet the students’ educational needs. Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing shall also provide direct instruction, supervise the work of specially trained Language Facilitators, and serve as a liaison between the school and various community agencies and professionals that provide services to students and their families.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Connects families with resources to support the communication development of their child.
Serves as an advocate for all children and youth.
Provides a positive learning environment that stimulates student learning and maintenance of skills.
Designs, implements, monitors, and reviews, as needed, appropriate IEPs for students and records student progress accurately and timely.
Develops modified lesson plans and regulated curricular materials for use by educational staff and instructional aides as needed.
Demonstrates a successful level of patience and compassion in order to establish respectful boundaries.
Works cooperatively with mainstream teachers on curriculum, modifications, and best practices for D/HH students.
Improves students’ cognitive and communication skills by using visual aids, ASL, and assistive technology.
Directs, supervises, and collaborates with Language Facilitators to ensure facilitation of communication between students’ and general education teachers, peers, and other school staff. as appropriate, in the student’s preferred communication mode(s).
Uses variety of teaching techniques to encourage student critical thinking and discussion in science and mathematics courses.
Three years' successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
Demonstrate knowledge of and experience with various community resources associated with the special needs of youth who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
Prefer knowledge of Sign Language or ability to learn, if necessary.
Excellent oral, written communication. and human relations skills.
Salary will be in accordance with the BEA contract salary schedule.
