Job Description
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the educational needs of individual diabetes patients, family and support systems regarding respiratory problems. Utilizes empowerment theory, motivational interviewing, goal setting and teach-back evaluation in a patient-centric approach to education. Conducts respiratory self-management education according to best practices in both individual and group setting. Performs direct patient care duties.
Job Responsibility
Conducts orientation for new staff members following the orientation outline.
Assesses skills of new staff members and teaches/reviews Team Steps and Service Excellence.
Provides orientation on ventilators for new nurses and in-service education for critical care nurses.
Provides in-service education for staff members on new modalities as well as current modes of therapy.
Assists staff members who need help in improving their skills.
Participates in reviewing procedures and forms when up-dating may be indicated.
Communicates suggestions for improving in-service programs.
Maintains related orientation and training records, and summarizes for reporting purposes.
Provides respiratory therapy as prescribed by a Physician, provides patient/significant other with respiratory therapy education as well as prepares, operates and maintains respiratory care equipment.

Job Qualification
Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Current License to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in New York State, and Current Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) Certification in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
1-3 years of relevant experience, required.
