NATURE OF WORK:
This is skilled work at the journeyman level in HVAC with supervisory responsibility for 3 full time HVAC mechanics and occasionally one or more helpers. Work involves responsibility for the performance of assignments requiring the use of HVAC skills in the maintenance and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems for school buildings and related facilities. Assignments are normally made in the form of requests for services from various schools or in the form of blueprints and specifications, or both. Work is subject to review for inspection upon completion, although normal repairs are usually made independently without supervision or close review.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans, organizes, schedules, oversees and reviews routine and special work projects.
Plans additions and alterations to heating, air conditioning, ventilating and refrigeration systems in schools and school structures.
Purchases materials needed to carry out the work as well as procuring additional labor assistance when necessary.
Repairs and maintains heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration equipment; conducts regular tours and inspection of this equipment for safe and efficient operation.
Calibrates and adjusts pneumatic and direct digital control equipment.
Installs new HVAC equipment and a variety of fixtures and equipment.
Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains existing equipment.
Ensures all work is completed in accordance with applicable building code regulations.
Utilizes building management system to monitor buildings and systems and to troubleshoot issues.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, terminology and best practices of the HVAC trade.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to make time and material estimates for repairs and projects.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches and blueprints.
Ability to occasionally plan and assign the work of helpers and laborers.
Skill in locating and correcting defects in HVAC and other trade-related equipment.
Skill in the use of the standard tools, equipment and testing devices of the trade.
Knowledge of computers, basic office software and other modern office equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other supervisors, subordinates and customers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in various settings subject to some interruptions and background noise. Work is performed with independence and initiative, referring unusual problems to the Manager of Maintenance Services or designee. Performs varied and responsible functions requiring judgment to ensure compliance with applicable departmental and BOE/town policies, procedures and methods. Manages and coordinates multiple priorities adhering to established time frames. Must be mobile, able to push/pull light objects, occasionally lift objects up to 75 pounds. Has frequent contact with employees, other BOE/town departments, and vendors. Must be able to concentrate on fine details with occasional interruption, attend to tasks/functions for more than forty-five to sixty (45-60) minutes at a time, remember multiple assignments given over long periods of time, and understand the theories behind several related concepts. Must be able to communicate in English and be understood clearly; hearing requirements include the ability to effectively interact with others in person or by telephone. May spend long hours outside and in awkward positions. May be exposed to smells associated with sewer and water systems, exposed to sounds associated with use of power tools and construction sites. Work may occasionally be required beyond normal working hours.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard high school or trade school with five (5) years experience as a journeyman HVAC mechanic or any equivalentcombination of training and experience. Possession of S-2 Unlimited Journeyperson license for HVAC work is required. Possession of a valid and job-related Connecticut drivers’ license. Desired Requirements: Possession of S-1 Unlimited Contractor license for HVAC work and refrigerant handling certification (EPA Technician Certification 608 - Universal). Previous supervisory experience of HVAC mechanics.

Successful completion of pre-employment physical examination, drug test and criminal background check will be required of any candidate receiving an offer of employment.
