This class conducts food service support activities. Incumbents assist with food preparation, service, and delivery as well as kitchen maintenance support tasks. As assigned, work may include: providing customer service; performing cashiering; assisting in the preparation of food; assisting in the maintenance of kitchen equipment/appliances; and assisting with monitoring of compliance with health and sanitation standards.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: These duties and percentage of time are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Typical Percentage of Time (none less than 10%)

1. Prepares and serves balanced and properly proportioned meals to the residents and staff. Follows recipes and correctly uses portion control utensils. 75%
2. Maintains daily records of food usage/prepared meals. 15%
3. Contributes to and assists in maintaining a sanitary and safe kitchen, and applying and following sanitary and safety guidelines, rules, and regulations. 10%

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• High School Diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED)
• One year experience in high volume cooking environment

• No special certification or license required.

• Serve Safe standards

• Reading recipes, and preparing food items accordingly
• Following directions and adhering to established procedures or protocols
• Operating standard kitchen equipment (e.g. convection ovens, stove tops, service utensils, thermometers, knives, deep fryers)

• Collaboration

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, walk, stand, balance, and use hands, wrists, or fingers in a repetitive motion. The employee is frequently required to hear, talk, feel, grasp using fingers or palms, lift, push, reach with arms and hands, and stoop. The employee is occasionally required to finger, pull, crouch and kneel. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
