Friendship School, located in Imperial Beach, is a special education school with an award-winning multi-sensory environment and individualized support services. We serve as many as 50 students between the ages of 3 and 22 from southern San Diego County who have multiple severe disabilities with health impairments. Our school is operated by the San Diego County Office of Education and is affiliated with the South County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).
Requirements / Qualifications

This position is not eligible for benefits.
The SDCOE is recruiting to add to the substitute pool of Substitute Student Attendants for Friendship School.
Under immediate supervision, performs duties of average difficulty in caring for children and young adults who have severe physical and/or intellectual disabilities in a program of instruction; provides clerical and instructional assistance to special education teachers. Performs maintenance and custodial duties involved in tending the needs of students including feeding, dressing, toileting, and movement.
Candidates must demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
- Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR,
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR,
- Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction. The assessment is administered only to candidates selected to move forward in the pre-employment process.
In addition to meeting the ESSA requirement for employment detailed above, applicants must have completed college-level course work in general academic subject areas such as math, science, and English, and have previous successful experience working with and caring for students with disabilities similar to those described above.

- A valid Food Handlers Card issued by the San Diego County Department of Health Services (can be completed as part of pre-employment if selected)
- A valid First Aid and CPR certificate (can be completed as part of pre-employment if selected)

It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs up to $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost) if processed using SDCOE fingerprinting services. In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional cost up to $77 (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck). Fingerprints can be paid in the form of a money order, cashier's check, or debit/credit card. If paid by card, you may incur a card processing fee.
