***4% SALARY INCREASE EFFECTIVE JULY 2024***
Under the general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets or related public works functions.
Incumbents may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work o a callback basis as needed. Depending on work assignment, incumbent may be required to live within a 45 minute response time.
Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the series. Incumbents in this classification receive on the job training, specific day to day direction and are closely supervised. Positions in this series are flexibly staffed to the Maintenance Worker II classification and incumbents are eligible to advance to II level after three years of experience, satisfactory performance evaluations and demonstrate ability to meet all of the requirements of the section incumbent is assigned to.
Examples of Duties Performed
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Streets: Shovels earth or debris using hand tools such as shovels, takes, picks and sledges. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. Operates simple pneumatic tools, spreads and tamps paving materials or gravel. Loads and unloads trucks; cuts brush; removes weeds; cleans culverts, drains and ditches. Maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks, and curbs. Lays rock base, shovels and rakes hot asphalt. Mixes and pours concrete. Assists in the installation of street signs and traffic safety painting. Loads and unloads supplies, materials and equipment, requiring ability to lift up to 100 pounds on a regular basis; prepares surfaces and applies gravel, asphalt, sealers, concrete, and premix materials to streets, requiring hand, arm shoulder movement, while bending and twisting from the waist, rakes, smooths, and tamps materials, cleans storm drains, drainage ditches, and requiring ability to bend, stoop, squat, and lie down, erects traffic control, warning and other signs, mows lawns, trims trees and bushes, requiring the ability to operate mowing vehicles and hand trimmers. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Maintenance Worker I: High School Diploma or equivalent., and six months of construction, maintenance or related work experience.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Maintenance Worker I
Knowledge of: Maintenance or construction methods, materials, and equipment related to the assigned area of maintenance; safety practices and procedures used in maintenance work.
Ability of: Understand and follow written and verbal instruction; maintain routine logs, timecards and forms; perform continuous heavy physical work safely, such as operating various equipment, tools and augers, loading and unloading materials(sometimes weighing up to 100 pounds); work independently or as a crew member; ability to establish and maintain courteous, effective public relations and to work harmoniously with others; operate a variety of motorized and mechanized equipment and tools, such as dump trucks, crew trucks, and compressors, skip loaders, backhoes, mud pumps, generators, concrete saws, etc.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Both levels: Possession of a valid California driver's license is required. Within 6 months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain, and thereafter maintain a California State Class A/B license, depending on assignment.
A pre-employment medical examination is required before appointment is made. Pursuant to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, periodic drug testing is required.
