Job Summary
The Hixon Writing Center at the California Institute of Technology seeks a Writing Specialist to help support the teaching and learning of academic writing. This writing specialist will focus on holding one-to-one meetings with student writers to discuss academic writing. The Writing Specialist reports to the director of the Hixon Writing Center.
Essential Job Duties
Tutor undergraduate, graduate student, and post-doctoral writers one-to-one and in small groups.
Collaborate with colleagues to create an inclusive and accessible writing center.
Assist in administrative tasks related to program records and assessment, as well as other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
An M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, English, History, Philosophy, or related fields.
Experience working with college-level writers on academic writing.
Experience working with multilingual writers.
Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
Familiarity with best practices in writing center pedagogy.
Interest in writing in the disciplines and/or writing across the curriculum pedagogy.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. or significant work toward the degree in Rhetoric/Composition, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, English, History, Philosophy, or related fields.
Demonstrated experience in writing center work.
Experience teaching in a first-year writing program or a WAC/WID program.
Familiarity with scholarship in the field of composition on topics relevant to the position (e.g., first-year writing, genre studies, transfer).
Training in applied linguistics and/or English language acquisition.
Experience with faculty development or program assessment.
Experience reading and responding to writing in diverse disciplines and genres.
Experience working within a STEM-focused curriculum and/or genre knowledge about scientific and technical writing is welcome but not required.
