Description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, is seeking an Adapted Aquatics and Fitness Program Coordinator. This position will provide advanced programmatic and supervisory support to the Special Programs Division and Therapeutic Recreation programs based out of the division office in Greenbelt, Maryland.
This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and supervision of programs for individuals with disabilities who reside in Prince George’s County, with a focus on adapted aquatics, adapted sports, veterans, and fitness programs. Our ideal candidate will provide high-level professional expertise and technical knowledge in therapeutic recreation, aquatics, disabilities, community recreation, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), program planning, staff supervision, behavior management, marketing, and time management. This position secures or retains certifications in Water Safety Instruction (WSI) and Lifeguarding, as well as maintains a Certified Pool Operators (CPO) License.
The starting salary for this position is $66,582 - $92,366, with eventual progression up to $118,150
Examples of Important Duties
1. Responsible for the assessment of participants’ complex needs, provision of accommodations to facilitate program participation, development of programs to meet assessed community needs, verification that staff follow safety procedures and resolution of problems or complaints.
2. Recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of program staff, including the coordination of work schedules, counseling of work performance, and completion of annual evaluations. Meets on a regular basis with supervisor on program progress. Assists with coordination of staff training programs.
3. Coordinates internally and externally, acting as a liaison and/or resource to departmental personnel. Performs community outreach and develops partnerships.
4. Implements public relations component of programs and provides ongoing support to program participants, families, and staff through regular program visits, personal contacts, and correspondence, including the maintenance of mailing lists for marketing and communication of events, programs and training.
5. Manages an inventory of equipment and supplies and completes the financial management (revenue and expenses; budget projections, purchase tracking, and cost recovery) of programs under supervision.
6. Ensures the safety of participants, staff, and volunteers at all times. Develops and maintains a written emergency plan. Maintains current medical information on all program participants. Maintains appropriate Red Cross certification (i.e., first aid, CPR, lifesaving, pool operators).
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy or any related field.
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in therapeutic recreation or closely related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total eight (8) years.
- A valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
- Obtain and maintain all applicable certifications.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.
• Certifications in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor, and Pool Operator’s License (or the ability to acquire the certifications within 6 months of employment)
• Experience in planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of adapted aquatics and fitness programs for individuals with disabilities.
• Expertise in therapeutic recreation, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and familiarity with the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design related to program accommodations and pools.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an office and in the community. Maintains a flexible schedule with occasional long hours; evening and weekend hours seasonally to supervise swim lessons, provide staff training, or oversee adaptive sports tournaments. On-call during program hours and responds to emergency situations. Programs are located throughout Prince George’s County and the position is responsible for regular program site visits. Works with individuals with various disabilities (i.e. cognitive, social/emotional, physical, and/or sensory).
