Position Summary
The Custodian I completes sanitation of restrooms, showers, and locker facilities and replenishes supplies. This position is responsible for sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming floor surfaces, and removing trash from all assigned areas. The Custodian I also clean chalkboards, walls, and other items as required. The incumbent in this role also cleans, polishes, and moves furniture and equipment for special events when needed. The Custodian I also meets with customers for feedback on work performed, may lock and unlock buildings, and clean, polish, and store equipment after use.
Rice University custodial department is looking for a flexible and motivated person that likes and enjoys cleaning. Additionally, this person needs to be able to get along well with others, be responsible and committed to keep his/her assigned areas clean, meeting our department cleaning standards. Finally, the ideal candidate would be respectful, responsible, and innovative; always looking for different ways to improve the cleaning of the building and be passionate about customer service.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the salary starts at $15.00 an hour. The work schedule available is 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Minimum Requirements
- No formal education or experience is required
- Skills
- Must be able to speak and understand basic English
- Working safely and efficiently, must be able to follow directions and work as team with others
- Must be able to record his/her working hours in Rice iO system
- Must be able to record his/her working hours and work orders in FE&P TRIRIGA system.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team with others
Preferences
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- Six months of previous custodial/housekeeping experience
- Good interpersonal skills
Essential Functions
- Cleans showers, restroom floors, lavatories, fixtures, kitchenettes, public spaces, offices, laboratories, etc.
- Replenishes paper supplies
- Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and mops floors
- Cleans and polishes furniture, glass, doors, mirrors, walls and other surfaces
- Removes trash
- Identifies and reports needed repairs
- Assists other custodians with work as needed
- Performs all other duties assigned
Additional Functions
- Must perform Cleanology inspections quarterly and maintain an 80% or above rating
- When short of staff, as part of the daily cleaning assignments, the custodial staff will be required to clean multiple buildings throughout the work day.
- Meets with customers for feedback on work performed
- Documents work performed on a work order including tasks done and hours charged
- Moves furniture and equipment to facilitate cleaning or set up for special events when needed
- May lock and unlock buildings as required
Workplace Requirements
This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work.
- Work Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings which may include offices, laboratories, classrooms, athletics facilities, covered walkways, etc. May be exposed to temperature and weather extremes when working under covered walkways or in facilities that are not climate-controlled.
- Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.
- Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a possibility of overtime weekly and overtime may be mandatory based on the circumstances, or emergencies. This position is considered essential during emergencies.
Physical Demands
- MEDIUM - Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking or standing up to eight hours per day. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, lift, see, reach, climb, and balance.
