MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”) Completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above the high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This position may be underfilled as a Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide (Grade S15; $43,498.00 - 72,496.11).
The employment standards for the Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide are: - Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade with coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Possession of a set of basic hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets, and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Vehicle and Equipment Technician I within two years of the job announcement's closing date by 5/31/2026.
Applicants hired at the Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide level will be non-competitively promoted to the Vehicle and Equipment Technician I level upon successful completion of an underfill agreement.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
For the Department of Vehicle Services:
- Valid motor vehicle driver's license.
- Prior to completion of the probationary period, certain positions require a current Virginia Safety State Inspection Certificate and/or a Virginia Emission Inspections License.
- A valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) or CDL – Class B with air brakes, P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements is required within 30 days of an offer. Applicants hired with a CLP must obtain a CDL – Class B with air brakes, P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements within eleven months of hire date.
- May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status.
- Fairfax County requires CDL holders to obtain and keep current a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).
- The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, Commercial Driver License screening and pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.
- Pre-employment, random, and post-accident and alcohol testing is required for these positions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 pounds on an average of once daily; stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; user creeper (or get on hands and knees) several times daily. Ability to work in temperatures ranging from 0 to 100 degrees and drive commercial vehicles. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
