Job Abstract

• Greet patrons coming and going within the library and provide an overall friendly and helpful demeanor.

• Answers basic questions and directs patrons to areas of interest or staff to further assist.

• Regular walkthroughs interior of library passing on any information regarding observations or code of conduct concerns.

• Regular walkthroughs of exterior grounds of the library passing on any information regarding observations, building problems, or code of conduct concerns.

• Inform patrons of code of conduct that needs to be followed, and redirect any behavior to stay within the code.

• Inform staff of any behavior that is persistent or patrons that refuse to comply to the code of conduct

• Work as crowd control for large events.

• Partner with librarians in working with disgruntled patrons by either coming to a resolution, going through warning, and/or exclusion procedures

• Inform other branch staff on potential problems or banned patrons.

• Work closely with police during incidents as needed.

• Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
  

Includes but are not limited to the following:

• Monitors the interior and exterior perimeters of the Library by walking around and observing the activities of patrons.
• Responds to public requests for information.
• Answers directional and informational questions and directs customers in locating the materials within the library or to the appropriate staff member for more technical assistance.
• Helps maintain the library in a neat and orderly condition; ensures facilities are safe for use and that all activities are conducted as safely as possible with the objective to prevent injuries.
• Communicates library rules to patrons of all ages, as required.
• Reports any misuse of library property, facilities, or inappropriate activities to the supervisor.
• Performs opening and closing procedures.
• Performs other related duties as is necessary and assigned.

The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

Education and/or Experience:

• A high school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
• Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.

• Bilingual in Spanish

The selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation.

Note:
For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

This position requires a twelve (12) month probationary period.

Employees are required to participate in the City’s direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
