Responsibilities:

• Independently plan, organize, and perform rodent colony management; Monitor and evaluate animals for signs of illness and stress.
• Perform animal handling and treatment procedures, which may include specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre-post procedural care. Be willing to learn new animal handling and treatment procedures.
• Maintain records of breeding, genotyping, weaning, treatments, necropsy, and so on.
• Be willing to help with ongoing projects and learn new biochemical lab techniques. Promotion is based on performance and LRI technologist guidelines.
• Performs laboratory techniques procedures required for experimental studies.
• Performs technical lab duties as delegated by the Research Staff Supervisor related to the assigned project. Schedules and performs the various analysis needed to complete the project.
• Assists with establishing and scheduling of various procedures and analysis.
• Prepares reagents, purifies chemicals using chromatography, distillation, etc., identifies, separates and quantifies various substances.
• Conducts tests and procedures utilizing various laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Accumulates data from analyses, prepares charts, graphs, statistical tables for presentation to Research Staff Supervisor for final analysis and preparation for publication, grant proposals and applications for research funds.
• Potentially orders laboratory supplies and equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

• Work performance should be appropriate to the level.
• One to two years of animal handling experience is preferred.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Be a team player and willing to work on day-to-day operations in the lab. Coordinate or organize the work of other lab members.
• Be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other necessary software.
• May perform additional related tasks as necessary.

Education:

• High School Diploma Required.  Associate’s degree in laboratory science field may offset one year of the work experience requirement. Bachelor's degree may offset two years of the work experience requirement.

• Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

• Minimum of two years of experience in a research or related laboratory environment..

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods
• Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
• Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information
• Ability to distinguish color
• Manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment
• Ability to lift and transport equipment or specimens weighing up to 20  pounds
• May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, bio-hazards, radioactive materials, etc.

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
