Leads, oversees, and facilitates communications for deaf/hard-of-hearing students during the school day, for academic and extracurricular activities; collaborates with school-based administrators to monitor IEP requirements, student interpreting/transliteration services, school needs, and regulation/policy compliance; supervises, evaluates, and develops staff; monitors trends in interpretation for current methodology, tools, and resource utilization; provides skilled interpreting/transliterating services in school settings; acts as a technical resource and primary service liaison to school-based administrators, teachers, students, and staff.
Required
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
Five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience relating to interpretation or transliteration, some of which may have been in a supervisory role.
National certification by Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) for sign language interpreters; OR
National certification by the Training, Evaluation, and Certification Unit (TECUnit) for cued language transliterates, OR
Possess a level III of the Quality Assurance Screening awarded by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as mandated by the Virginia Department of Education.
Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) code of ethics and/or the TECUnit code of conduct.
Knowledge of methods, materials, practices, procedures, and programs related to deaf culture.
Familiarity with applicable regulations, legislations, and policies.
Proficiency in the use of technology.
Skill in assessment and evaluation of staff and/or special programs.
Ability to apply knowledge to the needs and requirements of a public school system.
Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with culturally diverse school-based staff and students.
Ability to plan and conduct professional development activities.
Ability to maintain certification(s) and stay current with industry trends, through professional development.
Ability to provide guidance, manage sensitive information, and maintain confidentiality, at all times.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
