This recruitment is being conducted to fill one regular full-time position. The resulting eligible candidate list may be used to fill additional full, part-time, or limited term openings that may occur in the future.
THE POSITION:
Senior Maintenance Workers in Recreation & Parks - Parks, provide lead oversight for a crew and participate in the installation, construction, repair, maintenance, and landscaping of City-owned parks, trees, median strips, open space and related facilities. The Recreation & Parks Department maintains over 1,000 acres of community, neighborhood, and open space parks and are caretakers of public building and plaza landscape areas. Recreation & Parks - Parks Senior Maintenance Workers may function as lead workers on field crews, planning, assigning, supervising and checking work done; and in other instances, may work alone, having responsibility for the full range of maintenance work at an assigned site. Responsibilities include rotational standby assignments on evenings and weekends.
Senior Maintenance Workers may be assigned work related to different operational areas as needed, such as performing tree work, commercial irrigation work, playground safety inspection, landscape maintenance, specialized park maintenance and preparation of park amenities. Advanced training and certifications in these areas are highly desirable qualifications at entry. Additional specialized training will be provided as needed by the City.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:
The successful candidate:
- Possess three years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair of park and recreation facilities
- Works effectively in collaboration with a team, as well as independently
- Is proficient in multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at a time in various stages of completion.
- Recognizes the importance of skillfully engaging in positive community interactions as a representative of the City and TPW/Parks department; facilitating and balancing event or group needs with an understanding of the impact it may have on the parks and other maintenance activities.
- Currently holds, or has the ability to obtain certifications or licenses in related park maintenance activities. Examples include: Certified Playground Safety Inspector, International Society of Arboriculture, Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper, and Department of Pesticide Regulations.
Additionally, possession of, or ability to obtain immediately upon hire, a Class C California motor vehicle operator's license is required. Thirty-six months of recent satisfactory driving history is required and job offers will be contingent upon meeting the City of Santa Rosa Driving History Standard, viewable by clicking HERE. Knowledge of: Procedures, materials and methods used in the assigned department; uses and operation of general construction hand tools, power tools, trucks and heavy equipment; uses and operation of tools and equipment required for specific work assignment; regulations and codes applicable to area of assignment; arithmetic sufficient to calculate volumes, areas, lengths, percentages and conversions; safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power equipment and working in traffic and under hazardous conditions; basic principles of supervision and training.
Ability to: Operate the specialized hand and power tools and heavy equipment used in performing work in the area of assignment; perform heavy manual labor under adverse working conditions such as those described above; walk and work on slippery surfaces; carry and use backpack equipment, such as sprayers and blowers, weighing up to 35 pounds; perform work involving prolonged periods of standing, stooping, reaching, crawling and climbing; understand and carry out oral and written directions; follow directions while working in noisy conditions; read and interpret work orders, diagrams and maps; use hammers, nails, drills, saws, wrenches and other basic hand tools; take basic measurements of boards or spaces; complete work orders, incident reports and daily logs of work performed; calculate quantities of materials needed to complete tasks; plan and set up work and delegate tasks to others; train and supervise workers; communicate with the public and co-workers in a tactful and effective manner; operate a computer terminal or keyboard device.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience - Three years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair of park and recreation facilities or in other work specifically relevant to the area of assignment.
Education - Advanced training in public facilities maintenance and operations, skilled crafts or other specialty specifically relevant to the area of assignment is highly desirable.
In addition to the qualifications described above, Senior Maintenance Workers may be required to possess the following qualifications, depending on assignment:
Knowledge of: Principles of Integrated Pest Management; plant diseases, insects and weeds; laws and regulations regarding pest management; safe and effective methods for felling trees, removing branches and lowering limbs; tree care and health problems, diseases and pests; safety procedures for climbing trees and working around overhead wires; general horticulture; plant growth and pruning requirements; irrigation systems; and City and Caltrans traffic controls for safe work zones.
Ability to: Select and use appropriate resources for identifying plant problems, pests and treatment; perform work wearing appropriate personal protective equipment; lift and carry diving boards and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds; lift and carry lumber and bags of cement weighing up to 95 pounds; climb trees up to 150 feet high using saddles and ropes; lift, lower and drag heavy limbs weighing up to 80 pounds; carry objects such as jackhammers, concrete boxes, and pump motors weighing up to 95 pounds and lift them out of holes; select and use appropriate resources for identifying plant problems, pests and treatment; perform work wearing appropriate personal protective equipment; lift, lower, drag and carry heavy debris, tree limbs, and construction supplies weighing up to 60 pounds; perform work while wearing a back-pack blower or sprayer weighing up to 35 pounds; read plans and specifications; operate a loader; wear appropriate personal protective equipment; drag weights such as loaded lengths of hose representing 75 pounds of weight resistance; lift and operate jackhammers weighing 65 or 100 pounds; climb and perform work on ladders up to 12 feet in height.
License and Certificates:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, California, Class C driver license is required. Possession of a Class A license will be required prior to completion of the probationary period for positions where the license is required for performance of job duties. Possession of First Aid and/or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates issued by the American Red Cross or a comparable certifying entity is desirable.
Ability to obtain other licenses or certificates related to park maintenance activities as assigned may be required within the course of the position.
