WHAT WE OFFER The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. Aside from our annual base salary of approximately $154,845.72 - $216,805.26 an employee within this position will also be eligible for the following:
Ageneral salary increase of 3.5% effective December 22, 2024.
Educational Incentive - An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate's degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree, OR 5% for completion of a graduate degree.
Executive Annual Leave - 248 hours earned per year, increasing to 288 hours after 5 years of service, to 328 hours after 10 years of service, and to 368 hours after 15 years of service. *Credit for prior public service may be considered (Mangement Resolution, Section 1202).
Annual Leave Redemption - The ability to "cash in" or redeem up to 100 hours of Annual Leave per year after using 80 hours.
Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions. Eligible employees meeting the criteria in Sec. 1907 of the Management Resolution will receive two percent (2%) of their annualized compensation as a non-elective contribution towards their 401(k) account.
Health Plans – You are afforded a flexible credit allowance of up to $23,530 annually for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.
Flexible Spending Accounts -Employees may also participate in the Flexible Spending Accounts which increase their spending power by reimbursing them with pre-tax dollars for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.
Pension Plan - Both the County and you contribute to the County's Retirement Plan and to Social Security. If you are eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
Holidays - 12 paid days per year, including 1 floating holiday to use at your discretion.
Additional Benefits - Other benefits include disability plans, Employee Assistance Program, Life Insurance, Tuition Reimbursement, Benefit Reimbursement Program and a Wellness Program. Incumbent is also entitled to County-paid membership in professional organizations related to the position.
Under general direction, assists the Chief Probation Officer with the planning, organization, administration, and direction of the activities of the Probation Agency; acts for the Chief Probation Officer during absences and when assigned; performs related duties as required.

The Assistant Chief Probation Officer is an At-Will classification that is exempt from the provisions of the Civil Service Ordinance.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists the Chief Probation Officer in the formulation of policies and procedures for the administration of the County Probation Agency.
Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations; aids the Chief Probation Officer in coordinating Agency operations with the courts, law enforcement agencies, and related organizations.
Assists in the direction of the preparation and administration of the Agency's budget; collaborates with the Chief Probation Officer to ensure that fiscal controls are established and that program objectives are met in a cost-effective manner.
Assesses services and new program needs and makes recommendations to the Chief Probation Officer; in the absence of or when directed by the Chief Probation Officer, makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors, County Executive Office, and the courts.
Manages a multi-disciplined management team; evaluates agency personnel actions and the performance of subordinates.
Reviews proposed legislation, operational, policy and program changes to determine impact on the Probation Agency.
Works with the Agency's communication manager and media to develop and maintain a comprehensive public information program.
Works with Chief Deputies and Division Managers on the implementation and ongoing efforts related to the Agency's Strategic Plan.
Represents the County and maintains liaison with community organizations for the purpose of informing the public and promoting good will toward the Agency; makes presentations to groups to explain the Agency's positions, standards, and policies.
Attends meetings to maintain communication with the court, justice partners and other stakeholders.
Responds to situations at the Agency's Juvenile Facilities, Field Operations, and related facilities.
Assumes the Chief Probation Officer's duties in the Chief's absence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferably in behavioral science, social science, psychology, sociology, criminology, or a related field
AND
Extensive and progressively responsible administrative and/or management experience; two (2) years must have been in capacity equivalent to (or higher than) a Probation Division Manager in probation, parole services and/or institutional corrections functions with major budgetary responsibilities.
Additional related experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.
A graduate degree in a related field is desirable.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: This position has peace officer status under Penal Code Section 830.5 and may require incumbents to be armed. All Probation Officers will be expected to participate in a continuum of force training program which include control of aggression, tactical negotiations, unarmed defensive tactics and use of oleoresin capsicum spray. Incumbents must also enroll in, and successfully complete, the department's arming training, maintain qualification standards, and must be willing to accept an armed assignment at the discretion of the appointing authority.
At the time of appointment (or by 6 months after appointment), candidate must possess Penal Code 830.5 status.

Additionally, certified candidates will undergo a polygraph, psychological, and medical examination. Those entering the background process are required to provide a current (issued within the past 30 days) Department of Motor Vehicles printout (K4 - 10-year driving record) to the Background Investigator.
