Overview
Reporting to the Director of Accessibility and Disability Services, the Associate Director is a key leader in the Office of Disability Services (ODS). This role focuses on advancing accessibility across University programs and services, ensuring compliance with Federal and State laws, including the ADA/Section 504 and New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. The Associate Director supervises two professional ODS Staff, namely the Access Coordinators, and meticulously reviews documentation to ensure appropriate accommodations and effectively manage student services and accommodations. They collaborate with the Director to address student concerns, leveraging independent judgment to identify reasonable accommodations and minimize disability-related barriers. Additionally, the Associate Director engages with faculty and campus personnel to resolve individual student issues and reassess existing accommodations.
Responsibilities
Key Duties:
Oversee services for students registered with ODS, with a focus on cognitive, medical, and psychological disabilities.
Supervise and collaborate with Access Coordinators to evaluate and review student documentation, and comprehensive case management of students registered with ODS.
Knowledge of medical, psychological, and neuropsychological evaluations and ability to interpret these to determine reasonable accommodations.
Conduct intake appointments, maintain records, and ensure timely accommodation notifications.
Provide updates on student accommodations and consult with the Director on complex cases.
Develop and maintain relationships with campus colleagues, including Counseling and Psychological Services, University health Services, Residential College Deans, Housing Office, Transportation and Parking, and the Graduate School, to approve student accommodations.
Collaborate with the Accommodations Coordinator on physical access, assistive technology, and temporary injuries.
Serve as the primary contact for academic, dining, transportation and parking, and housing accommodation implementation.
Maintain statistical records for reporting and continuously develop procedures.
Develop and deliver training on accessibility and disabilities for campus constituents.
Represent ODS and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity on access and diversity initiatives, serving on committees and special projects.
Qualifications
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Four to six years of experience providing services to students with disabilities in higher education.
Experience managing and supervising professional staff.
Expertise in reviewing clinical documentation, conducting interactive processes, and providing accommodations.
Knowledge of ADA, Section 504, NJLAD, FHA, and federal regulatory requirements for educational institutions.
Preferred:
Education and/or experience in education, social work, counseling, or psychology.
Experience in postsecondary institutions.
Familiarity with electronic data management systems.
Ability to manage complex caseloads of disability-related student matters.
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Excellent judgment, maturity, and interpersonal skills.
Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
Sensitivity to diversity issues and the ability to interact with a diverse student, staff, and faculty population.
Familiarity with assistive technology.
