THE POSITIONThe City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department is seeking a Fleet Services Technician I to join our Fleet Services Team. This is the full journey-level position in the Fleet Services Technician series. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for maintaining the overall operating condition of all vehicles and equipment within the City’s fleet. This includes automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, fire trucks, loaders, sewer cleaning trucks, aerial lifts, AC generators, specialized construction and emergency vehicles, equipment powered by gasoline, diesel and electric engines, vehicles operated hydraulically, or with alternate fuels. Performs a variety of tasks including preventative maintenance inspections, mandated inspections, in-depth testing and diagnoses, and all facets of minor to major repairs including: over-hauling of engines, transmissions, drive-trains and other major components. Additional tasks include: installation, service and repair of hydraulic equipment on vehicles and equipment within the fleet, diagnosis and repair of electrical components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches and high-voltage light systems. The Fleet Services Technician I will document all maintenance performed by utilizing the City’s computerized fleet maintenance system and will perform other work as required. All Technicians must provide their own set of professional tools consistent with an apprentice level automotive technician and will receive an annual tool allowance.

- Basic experience in fuel delivery systems, hydraulic systems, hydraulic brakes, air brakes, suspensions, transmissions, and other areas associated with the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of city vehicles and equipment (Police Interceptors, Fire Apparatus, service trucks, light duty cars and trucks, and construction equipment).
- Modern office practices, including use of a personal computer and use of computerized work order program.
Ability to:- Perform mechanical inspections, difficult and complex testing, diagnostic and repair procedures following standard procedures on a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Read and apply factory service manual repair techniques and procedures and participate in repairs on City equipment.
- Oversee and participate in the most complex repairs on City equipment.
- Use a variety of equipment maintenance tools and equipment.
- Maintain inventory and arrange for supplies/equipment as necessary.
- Complete necessary paperwork used in documenting the repair process.
- Maintain work records.
- Assist in determining and performing mechanical repair needs.
- Work cooperatively with coworkers.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Operate computer systems and project/asset management software.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:Three (3) years of experience performing minor and major vehicle and equipment repair, including maintenance of both diesel, gas-powered and electric equipment.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:Completion of an automotive technical training program is desirable, or one year of professional automotive experience performing preventative maintenance, and minor vehicle and equipment repairs.
Must possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and will be required to obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license within twelve (12) months of appointment.
ASE Certifications:Applicants must possess or obtain the following four (4) ASE Automotive certifications within one year of appointment: A4 – Suspension and Steering: A5 – Brakes: A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems: and A8 – Engine performance. Must possess a complete set of professional tools consistent with an advanced journeyman level.
