| Responsibilities: | The New School Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining and operating the buildings on campus. Facilities Management is dedicated to excellent customer service in all aspects of its operations. We invite feedback and suggestions from all members of the university community that will help us make the New School campus beautiful, safe, and sustainable.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) is a live-in staff member within The New School residence halls and an integral part of the Summer Operations program at The New School. RAs provide administrative support for The New School residence halls. RAs work with staff to provide assistance to students, summer interns, and other on-campus guests in order to facilitate the best possible operation of the residence halls.
Summer RAs are expected to serve all those residing in New School housing and to uphold the standards of The New School and Facilities Management in the highest regard possible. It is essential that all staff members are viewed as credible, positive role models that abide by the university, Facilities Management, and the Office of Residential Education policies and procedures, the RA position description and contract, and the housing contract. CGAs are expected to behave in a manner that is professional and attuned to the goals and objectives of Facilities Management, both on- and off-campus. RAs have the opportunity to work closely with Summer on-campus residents and are in a unique position to positively influence their on-campus experience over the Summer. RAs develop supportive relationships with individual residents and educate students on their rights and responsibilities as identified in the Summer Housing Agreement, Student Code of Conduct, and other university policies.
The position, including specific duties, are contingent on the University’s guidance and direction in response to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. This position is for the Summer of 2024 only.
University Resource Support:
- Serve as a resource and make appropriate referrals while promoting full cooperation with all university offices.
- Conduct monthly community meetings to foster a continued sense of community and provide community members with important information as it relates to their on-campus living experience.
- Inform students and other summer occupants of University and other appropriate resources and general information.
- Work with the professional staff team to ensure that university, state, and local safety guidelines are enacted.
Community, Inclusion and Belonging: - Provide engagement opportunities for on-campus residents to engage with each other and to foster a sense of shared community and belonging as a member of the hall and University community.
- Build an inclusive community that promotes and supports the exchange of diverse ideas and beliefs.
- Serve as an approachable and active community member within the floor, hall, and university.
- Serve as a university official representing The New School, Facilities Management, and the Office of Residential Education in a positive and professional manner.
- Exhibit the behavior of a Facilities Management staff member.
Student Behavior & Crisis Response: - Enforce the rules, regulations, and policies / procedures of The New School, Facilities Management, and Office of Residential Education as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct & the Residence Hall Handbook.
- Respond to behavioral, crisis/emergency situations and refer situations to professional staff when appropriate.
- Document and communicate incidents in an accurate and timely manner no later than 9:00 AM the next day.
- Mediate community conflicts.
- Address and report any type of behavior that is or can be perceived to be discriminatory or offensive.
- Conduct any necessary follow up with residents and assist as needed with the proceedings of the University conduct system, including attendance at student conduct hearings as necessary.
- Serve in a weekly on-call rotation for their designated residence hall.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all incidents and student concerns.
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
The University has identified the Summer RA position as a Campus Security Authority under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“the Clery Act”). The law defines a CSA as “[a]n official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings.” CSAs are responsible for reporting crimes and violations described in the Clery Act to The New School Campus Security whenever they become aware of them. This information, when confirmed, is then included in the university’s federally mandated annual security and fire safety report, which is distributed every year on or before October 1. The information also assists in the identification of crime on and around campus.
Administrative Tasks:
- Regularly check email and respond to messages from students, faculty, and staff as it pertains to Summer RA position responsibilities.
- Work from your building’s Staff Office to assist residents while on-call, consisting of 3 hours in the evening when the building is occupied. Office hours may vary per community based on the needs of the population.
- Unoccupied Buildings: When a Summer RA is in an unoccupied building or does not have residents assigned to them they will work at a minimum of 15 hours of office hours. These hours will be served at the discretion of your supervisor and the Director of Summer Housing Operations.
- Curfew: Summer Resident Assistants assigned to a building with residents 18 years of age and younger will be required to perform curfew check responsibilities every evening for the duration of the program.
- Exercise proper care for all University keys, manuals, identification cards, telephones and other materials issued by Facilities Management and Office of Residential Education.
- Attend weekly staff meetings, regular one-on-one meetings with supervisors, and training as scheduled.
- Adhere to communicated expectations and University standards as it pertains to declining balance credit card usage, obtaining receipts, and reconciling expenses within 24 hours of use.
- Submit all departmental paperwork, forms and reports to the supervisor according to established deadlines.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by Facilities Management and Office of Residential Education.
- Execute other administrative tasks as assigned.
Operations: - Assist with opening, vacation breaks (i.e. Memorial Day, the July 4th holiday, and transition times between semesters when buildings are occupied), closing, and other operational functions as they pertain to the residence halls.
- Will be involved with check-ins, check-outs and shut downs/evacuations (if necessary).
- Assist with the turnover of spaces between summer programs which could include but isn’t limited to: placing linens and other necessary materials in rooms prior to check-ins, assisting Facilities in the retrieval of linens if necessary, etc.
- Assist summer residents when locked out and follow appropriate documentation procedures.
- Assist in procedures for emergencies including, natural disasters, health pandemics, medical, mental health, and facility-related issues.
- Assist residents with submitting work orders for all maintenance/furniture/housekeeping needs; report maintenance concerns in common areas; communicate with supervisor regarding reported concerns, and follow-up as necessary.
- Notify supervisor of damage to university property including fire equipment, alarm systems, common areas, and recreational spaces.
- Facilitate approved room changes by properly checking students in or out of their rooms and updating corresponding documentation.
- Assist with executing health and safety inspections as scheduled and follow appropriate documentation procedures.
- Participate in planned emergency preparedness drills.
COMPENSATION
1. A single occupancy bedroom within one of The New School’s residence halls.
2. A summer stipend of $1650 which will be paid bi-weekly during periods of employment. Based on the hiring date for the position, this stipend will be prorated accordingly if hired after the contract date.
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT
Summer Resident Assistants must participate in all training and development opportunities. Summer RAs are responsible for making arrangements with summer classes, outside employment, and vacation plans to participate in all training and development activities.
1. This is a summer appointment beginning on May 21, 2024 through August 12, 2024. 2. Summer RAs are expected to stay in the residence halls through The New School break periods and holidays based on the needs of the residence hall. Summer RAs will be required to be dismissed for any holiday or break periods by the Director of Summer Housing Operations or their designee. 3. Summer RAs are expected to work and remain in the residence halls during times when the University is open and during blackout periods as outlined in the Summer RA contract and participate in summer move-ins and move-outs based on the community need. Extended absences from the residence hall (more than 72 hours) must be arranged in advance with their direct supervisor (Resident Director) and may not fall within blackout periods. All Summer RAs must return by the contractual dates of return for any periods of time during the university closure. 4. Summer RAs are expected to attend Summer Staff Training. 5. Attend weekly staff meetings – date & time determined by RD of building. 6. Participate in departmental events, processes, and any other events that may arise.
