The Police Investigative Intern is a non-paid, volunteer position which introduces Individuals Interested In pursuing a career in law enforcement with the opportunity to gain valuable job experience and/or college credit. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this volunteer position meets their school's requirements for college credit and to abide by all applicable rules and guidelines set forth by their school.
CLASS DEFINITION: Volunteer interns will be assigned to assist the Police Department's Investigations Bureau.
Job Overview
Make follow-up phone calls with Investigative principles
Document crime related activity by creating written reports and processing data.
Assist with the collection and handling of evidence,
Take photographs or measurements at crime scenes and process records following Department procedures.
Assist with crime analysis duties by gathering, organizing, and preparing crime related data for analysis by staff.
Assist the court liaison with preparing supporting documents for court appearances.
Support undercover operations,
Operate a computer and a variety of software Including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Assist Property and Evidence with the storage and destruction of property
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or currently enrolled in their junior or senior year of study in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE: Previous analytical and investigative experience is desirable. Must possess a high degree of computer literacy with all Windows applications, in particular Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license. VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS: Of good moral character and excellent references. Volunteer a minimum of 8 hours per week as scheduled. Generally volunteer hours will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. with some evening and weekend hours.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE INVESTIGATIVE INTERN:
United States citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and applied for United States citizenship.
Candidates selected for processing will be fingerprinted for the purposes of searching of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records.
Candidates must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Candidates must be free of any felony convictions.
Candidates must have normal hearing acuity.
Candidates must have vision correctable to 20/20 and normal color vision.
REQUISITE ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action.
Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
Intermediate to advanced level experience with all Windows applications particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Maintain effective working relationships with staff, employees, other officers, supervisors, City officials, and the general public.
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing; walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping, and bending; inputting data into a computer terminal; exposure to computer glare, vibrations, and pitch; lifting, carrying, and moving objects totaling approximately 25 pounds in weight; and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
Employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; meet intensive and changing deadlines and interact with City staff, customers, vendors, contractors, and the public.

SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process will consist of the following:
Oral panel interview.
Division Commander Interview.
Background investigation including California Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) criminal history check (Live Scan fingerprinting).

Applicants failing any portion of the selection process will not be considered.
