About the Position
This position is a hands-on supervisory position primarily responsible for the supervision, budget, contracts, and grounds maintenance of the facility grounds areas for Goodwin House Alexandria. Other duties may be assigned during inclement weather.
Job Duties

Design, plan, implement the installation of landscape scenes, such as plant trees, shrubs, grass, retaining blocks, flower beds, water fountains, etc.

Monitor plant life on grounds for health, stability, appropriate care and makes appropriate / suitable changes.

Provide supervisory responsibilities with GHA grounds personnel in directing and coordinating daily assignments, conducting annual evaluations, enforcing progressive discipline, filling vacancies, and monitoring grounds budget.

Oversee day to day operations of grounds contractor.

Write RFP, obtain proposals, recommend and enforce contracted services of grounds/landscaping to ensure contract requirements are fulfilled and quality management is attained. Work in gardens daily as weather permits, planting, weeding, trimming, adding mulch, water foliage as necessary, prune and trim shrubs as needed.

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain campus irrigation system and sprinkler heads, recommending contract resource as needed.

Patrol visitor and employee sections of the parking lots and the grounds for trash or debris; empty trash receptacles on a daily or as needed basis to maintain clean appearance including the Beauregard Street bus stop and public trash receptacle(s) in front of The Spire.

Annually in the spring prepare/provide hoses and water supply in various locations for residential use for the spring, summer and fall seasons and winterize the same in early October.

Serve as staff liaison to resident grounds and beautification committee.

Maintains supply of doggie bags in stock and in the dispenser for Doggie Park and other locations throughout the community.

Provides information to supervisor of any concrete, asphalt repairs throughout the community.

During periods of inclement weather, work on other projects as assigned by the Director.

Job Requirements

Two-year minimum of knowledge, training or education in horticulture for the care, planting and maintenance of flowers, ornamental plants, shrubbery and trees.

Three years minimum experience in commercial landscaping, design, layout and construction, and irrigation systems.

Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and various products used in grounds maintenance through training or experience

Must possess ability to deal tactfully with residents, staff, visitors, and guests.

Must have a valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.

Must speak, read, and write English proficiently.
