Overview
Assist in planning, organizing and directing therapeutic play and recreation programs to effect improvement in the physical, mental and social well-being of the consumers of an Intense Residential Treatment Program.
Responsibilities
Assist in planning, organizing and directing therapeutic play and recreation programs to include such activities as games, parties, music and arts and crafts.
Conduct group and individual recreation activities according to patients' needs, capabilities and interests; determine and implement necessary precautions in exercising responsibility for the care and safety of patients.
Consult with nursing personnel, medical staff and other members of the health team to assess the recreational needs of patients.
Establish and maintain relationships with relatives in assisting patients to adjust to the hospital setting; assist staff in preparing patients for surgery and other stressful situations. Prepare reports reflecting patients' behavior and progress for medical staff and other team members.
Assist in the selection, distribution, maintenance, storage, evaluation and purchase of recreational supplies and equipment.
Participate in patient care conferences and make recommendations concerning new recreational therapy methods and techniques.
Assist in supervising and coordinating the work of individual and group volunteers.
Provide instruction and guidance to allied health students in recreational therapy methods and techniques. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work or related field.
Must have at least 1 year experience in recreational/play therapy.
