Report To: Sr. Director of Athletics or Associate Athletic Director
Summary: The head women’s basketball coach is responsible for establishing an effective team program for student-athletes to have a positive intercollegiate athletics experience. A head coach must demonstrate exceptional administrative and technical coaching skills and emphasize the whole-person development of student-athletes within their program to see them empowered, transformed, and thriving. The head coach is fully committed to the mission, vision, and goals of Biola University – to train these student leaders to impact the world for Christ. The head coach will comply with all NCAA Division II legislative requirements and applicable conference rules and regulations.
Responsibilities:
Coaching
Demonstrate expert knowledge of the sport and a comprehensive understanding of issues surrounding student-athlete development in that sport.
Emphasize the athletic development of all student-athletes within the program through constructive feedback and effective communication.
Organize and conduct efficient and effective practice sessions.
Provide proper scouting, planning, and execution of a game plan during competition.
Conduct a program regularly qualifying for the PacWest conference championship tournament and is often in contention for the NCAA regional tournament.
Provide oversight of all assistant coaches to ensure coaching staff compliance with all NCAA Division II and conference rules and regulations.
Engage with associated conference and professional coaches organizations regarding your sport and its regulations at the collegiate level.
Recruiting
Work closely with the Admissions Department to recruit all prospective student-athletes (PSAs).
Ensure all recruiting activities are reported accurately in the compliance software.
Know and follow all NCAA Division II legislation for recruiting visits, tryouts, PSA evaluations, communication with PSAs, and recruiting periods.
Target recruitment efforts to result in effective signings of PSAs who are institutionally compatible with the Christian faith, academic expectations, commitment to graduation, and enhancing the Biola identity.
Support university enrollment by maintaining a roster at a target size specified by the senior director of athletics.
Student-Athlete Development
Develop a Christian spiritual focus that promotes individual and team spiritual growth.
Support current student-athletes toward academic success and graduation.
Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes via various university systems.
Strive to minimize student-athlete class absences with proactive scheduling of practices and competitions.
Provide community engagement opportunities for student-athletes while ensuring compliance with all associated policies and regulations.
Actively influence the student-athlete's conduct, public image, and spirit of cooperativeness following the university objectives.
Support student-athletes through any care or conduct processes with the Student Care team.
Program Administration
Submit and meet annual goals in the following five categories: Athletic Development and Performance; Fundraising, Community Engagement, and Budget Management; NCAA Compliance and Program Organization; Student-Athlete Academic Success; Student-Athlete Well-Being and Spiritual Growth.
Demonstrate behavioral competencies in areas such as, but not limited to, professionalism, communication, inclusivity, and respect for others.
Assist in helping to promote the team and its success to the greater student body to help foster positive school spirit.
Oversee the operational budget, purchases, expense reconciliations, and travel arrangements for the program in alignment with all institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations.
Recommend student-athletes to receive awards based on conference and national office policies.
Collaborate with the laundry attendant regarding the schedule, inventory, issuance, and maintenance of equipment and uniforms per institutional policies and best practices.
Ensure institutional equipment and supplies are appropriately purchased, tracked, used, and maintained.
Coordinate hiring support personnel (assistant coaches, managers, volunteers) with the associate athletic director for internal operations as approved by the current budget.
Responsible for the team’s conduct and appearance during home or away events and travel.
Work with the Sports Information staff regarding team pictures, post-game stories, and website information.
Attend all institutional meetings (department, divisional, etc.), coaches’ committee meetings, conference coaches committee meetings, and turn in national, regional, and conference information requests and ballots.
Annually declare and receive approval from the director of athletics and/or university president for non-Biola athletically related income.
Annually submit team rules to direct supervisor if there is any variance from established department-wide team rules in the Athletics Operations and Compliance Manual.
Ensure all coaching staff maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
NCAA Compliance
Self-report any potential NCAA violations in a timely manner.
Proficient use of Biola’s compliance software, including timely, accurate, and complete submission of all necessary forms, schedules, and other required submissions. Forms include but are not limited to recruiting, financial aid, NLIs, transcript evaluation, occasional meals, and aid renewal/non-renewal.
In consultation with the office of compliance, provide education and support to team members and PSAs regarding the importance of compliance, eligibility requirements and status, employment regulation, NLI regulations, and initial eligibility (via the NCAA Eligibility Portal).
Monitor the scheduling process, verifying that the schedule meets NCAA sport sponsorship requirements, conference scheduling requirements, and missed class time policies.
Facilitate the provision of all information necessary to determine a PSA’s initial eligibility through the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Ensure that all assistant coaches in the program comply with all institutional, NCAA Division II, and conference rules and regulations regarding recruiting.
Annually pass the NCAA Coach’s Certification modules in the NCAA Learning Portal and ensure assistant coaches do the same before participating in CARA or off-campus recruiting.
