Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academics in the College of Social Sciences, the Program Director of Project Bound is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program, which includes, but is not limited to, facilitating the enrollment of all formerly incarcerated students who qualify for the program. The Program Director assesses each student's unique academic needs and familiarizes them with resources and services that will aid them in applying, matriculating, and ultimately graduating from San José State University. With the support of the Executive Director and Faculty Fellow, the Program Director acts as a liaison and will develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators in various departments (such as Admissions, Evaluations, Financial Aid, CAPS, Student Success Centers, Career Center, etc.), local community colleges, and key stakeholders as well as partners in the external community (e.g., probation, parole, corrections, reentry services, and Santa Clara County Social services) that promote the success of Project Rebound. The Program Coordinator will undertake outreach promoting the program and will coordinate academic workshops for current and prospective students at SJSU on succeeding in higher education.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized pre-enrollment services to prospective Project Rebound students (e.g., academic assessment, financial aid advising) to help them prepare for admission to SJSU
- Provide ongoing direction, support, and programming for enrolled PR students to maximize their opportunities for success in graduation and career planning
- Communicate with parole and probation on behalf of current, graduated, and prospective students when necessary (both adults and juveniles). Program Director will selectively produce letters of support to the Board of Parole Terms, potential employers, and academic programs
- Teach soft skills course to PR students
- Seek to foster collegiality and mentorship amongst Project Rebound students
- Recruit new and existing students for the program
- Organize and/or attend outreach activities
- Attend policy, advocacy, and community events to represent PR
- Develop and distribute outreach publications to create easy pathways to enrollment at SJSU for formerly incarcerated students
- Consult with Executive Director (ED) on development of annual budget
- Manage accounts, providing regular budget reports to the Principal Investigator
- Oversee purchases for the program, preparing and submitting all requisitions for contracts and purchase orders
- Develop criteria for awarding emergency funding, tuition and textbook financial assistance to students
- Assist ED in preparing annual Chancellor's report
- Assist ED with fundraising and preparing reports for funders
- Create regular reports for presentation to ED, Chancellor's Office, and other invested parties
- Develop and maintain strong records and statistical data regarding outreach, applications, admissions, retention, nature of program participation, and graduation rates, as a means of evaluating the program and articulating the expansion of services available to clients
- Lead staff and student volunteers/interns
- Advise Faculty Fellow on how they can best support the chapter and students

Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related
- Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree
- Experience overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s target population (i.e., a formerly incarcerated person)
- Two or more years of experience working with incarcerated and/or formerly incarcerated populations professional student services work experience (e.g., student advising)
- Experience supervising other staff
- Familiarity/experience with the Project Rebound program
Compensation
Classification: Student Services Professional IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,200/month - $6,900/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,019/month - $8,585/month
