JOB SUMMARY: Uses knowledge of English and Spanish to provide assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners; and performs a variety of related services requiring English and Spanish.
SUPERVISION: Receives supervision from a manager at or above the level of Coordinator. Receives technical instructions from a teacher and/or other certificated staff member.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects. • Assists assigned students with challenges related to school achievement as a result of language barriers. • Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self-image and ability to cooperate and interact with other students and adults. • Performs a variety of tasks that support classroom instruction. • Consults with teacher on ways to better meet students' needs. • Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students. • Serves as interpreter as needed. • Translates correspondence to parents in English or Spanish. • Administers oral language proficiency and academic tests in English and Spanish to students. • Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved tests. • Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of test scores obtained. • Tests students on a one-to-one basis. • Verifies student cumulative record information. • Posts, maintains, and updates testing data. • May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation. • Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year: providing instructional assistance interpreting or translating services in the English and Spanish language. -AND- High school graduation or the equivalent. -AND- • Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level, -OR- • Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, -OR- • Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS (At time of appointment and during employment): An appropriate, valid California driver license.
