Maintenance Worker I
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One year of maintenance and repair experience is desirable.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with a safe driving record or the ability to obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment is required. When assigned to Fleet or Wastewater and Storm water, an air brake and tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment is required. When assigned to Golf Course Operations, a Class B California Driver's License is not required. However, a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.
Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of various maintenance equipment and tools including heavy and light power driven equipment, and power and hand tools.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
General methods and techniques of maintenance and repair.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
Learn the operations, services and activities of the maintenance and repair program in assigned area.
Learn basic methods and techniques of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting trades.
Learn methods and techniques of planting and caring for trees, shrubs and plants.
Learn methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control and treating minor plant diseases.
Learn methods and techniques of applying pesticides and herbicides.
Learn methods and techniques of landscape installation, maintenance and reconstruction.
Learn principles and practices of golf course maintenance work including maintenance of greens and turf.
Learn basic irrigation system repair and maintenance techniques.
Learn methods and techniques of preparing and applying road surfaces including asphalt and chip seal.
Learn methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs, and related maintenance areas.
Learn methods and techniques of sign fabrication, street painting and stenciling.
Learn methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of pumps, compressors, sewer lines and swimming pool equipment.
Learn building construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
Learn the basic methods and techniques of maintenance and repair of audio-visual equipment.
Learn methods and techniques of evaluating tidal action and resulting effects on beach areas.
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools including heavy and light power driven equipment and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Learn and apply pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the qualifications of Maintenance Worker I:
Experience: At least two years of maintenance and repair experience in assigned program area.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with a safe driving record or the ability to obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment is required. When assigned to Golf Course Operations, a Class B California Driver's License is not required. However, a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.
Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.
Knowledge of:

Methods and techniques of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting trades.
Methods and techniques of planting and caring for trees, shrubs and plants.
Methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control and treating minor plant diseases.

Principles and practices of golf course maintenance work including maintenance of greens and turf.
Methods and techniques of mixing and finishing concrete.
Methods and techniques of preparing and applying road surfaces including asphalt and chip seal.
Methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs, storm drains and related maintenance areas.
Methods and techniques of sign fabrication, street painting and stenciling.
Basic irrigation system installation, repair and maintenance techniques.
Methods and techniques of evaluating tidal action and resulting effects on beach areas.
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of pumps, compressors, sewer lines and pool equipment.
Building construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Perform journey level maintenance, construction or repair duties within the area of assignment.
Perform minor carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting duties.
Safely and effectively perform herbicide and pesticide application functions.
Perform confined space entry duties.
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools including heavy and light power driven equipment and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
A completed City of Coronado employment application must be received in the Human Resources Division at www.coronado.ca.us, under the Quick Link to Employment.
