The job of Student Helper was established for the purpose(s) of pairing college students, CURRENTLY enrolled in at least 12 units, with classrooms in order to provide additional assistance and support. Student Helpers work with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a classroom teacher. In addition to in class support, Student Helpers assist in supervising play areas and providing clerical relief to assigned classroom teacher.
Student Helper schedules vary; however, are generally 3.0 - 4.0 hours between 9:00 am through 2:00 pm. Due to college class schedules, the District recognizes that a Student Helper schedule may vary; however, applicants must be committed to a consistent schedule for each semester.
Examples of Duties
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Assists students, individually or in small groups (e.g., read stories, writes stories children tell about their paintings, mixes paint, cuts papers, assembles materials) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Maintains classroom equipment and work area for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; and providing an orderly, clean, and safe learning environment.
Helps plan and prepare bulletin boards.
Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
Orients new pupils to the classroom.
Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies
Minimum Qualifications
Full-time enrollment in a college or university. (ATTACH YOUR SCHOOL SCHEDULE FOR THE CORRESPONDING SEMESTER SCHEDULE NEEDS TO SHOW YOUR NAME, NAME OF SCHOOL AND NUMBER OF UNITS/CREDITS ENROLLED.)
Experience working with children is desirable.
As an hourly employee hours are not guaranteed; position is not benefits eligible.
