Department Summary:
The MITRE Corporation’s Emerging Engineering and Physical Sciences Department is seeking an energetic engineer or scientist with expertise in water infrastructure to work in a dynamic research and analysis environment focused on solving some of our customers biggest infrastructure technology challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership. The department is looking to grow by adding someone with experience applying research to real-world problems in this critical infrastructure area.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Identification and assessment of, and proposing mitigation steps for water and dams infrastructure and watershed risks, threats, and vulnerabilities.
- Transdisciplinary collaboration with diverse experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in watershed management, water and dams infrastructure, and associated technologies.
- Understanding and communicating interdependencies within broader water infrastructure systems to highlight possible risks of water infrastructure failures to MITRE customers and partners.
- Research and communicate technology performance and technology trade-offs such as cost, effectiveness, and other criteria for application to customer challenges.
- Monitor and evaluate the maturity of emerging technologies used in the water infrastructure domain, such as technologies to monitor water availability and distribution, assess inefficiencies in water infrastructure systems, automate water infrastructure processes, and to provide early indications and warnings of disruptions to water infrastructure systems.
- Design and evaluation of approaches to enhancing resilience of water infrastructure, best management practices, and technologies; determination of evaluation of possible courses of action to meet customer requirements.
- Leading and contributing to the development of data-driven analysis models and decision support tools for water infrastructure and watershed resilience.
- Managing outcome assessments that promote measuring, monitoring, and verification of technologies in field demonstrations and exercises.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Deep technical expertise in one or more water infrastructure technology areas, including: hydrology, hydraulics, watershed management, water or wastewater treatment, real-time water quality and quantity monitoring, flooding, or drought monitoring.
- Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability (through prior work) to work on transdisciplinary teams to perform research and development efforts for new technologies and/or approaches to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external experts and stakeholders.
- The ability to think critically and be proactive in applying solutions and problem-solving with minimal supervision.
- Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD and 2+ years relevant experience in one of the following areas: Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Hydrology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, and/or a related degree.
- Experience modeling and performing data analysis utilizing programming languages such as Python or R.
- Experience working with geospatial tools, such as ArcMap, ArcPro, and ESRI Insights.
- Basic understanding of a broad range of water infrastructure technologies.
