The Robert W. Van
Houten Library at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks an energetic,
flexible, and collaborative professional for full-time, non-tenure-track
Research and Instruction Librarian (RIL) position. Reporting to the Associate
University Librarian for Research and Engagement, the RIL plays a multifaceted
role, combining research support, subject liaison, and instruction
responsibilities. This position is integral to promoting the effective use of
library resources, enhancing information literacy skills, and leading
collection development and management efforts in their liaison areas. The
librarian will collaborate with faculty, students, and relevant stakeholders to
advance research activities, facilitate instructional programs, and champion innovative
library initiatives. As a library professional, the incumbent will be expected
to maintain their knowledge of the current state of library and higher
education matters. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent
independent and collaborative customer service. The position typically works a
35-hour work week with one remote work day and may require one evening shift
per week and occasional weekend hours based on library needs.
Essential Functions:
Liaison and Engagement (35%)
- Serves as a subject liaison
librarian to assigned disciplines. Builds relationships and responds to
students, faculty, scholars, and staff to support teaching, learning, and
research.
- Provides outreach,
consultation, and workshops/events on topics relevant to library users,
including but not limited to open access, open education, copyright, data
management, and digital scholarship.
- Performs cited reference
searches for promotion and tenure; provides documentation for university
and departmental accreditation as needed.
- Monitors relevant
information sources; partners with faculty and library acquisitions team
to select, evaluate, purchase, and weed relevant library collections to
support current academic and research needs.
- Participates in
university-wide and library committees.
Research and Instruction (30%)
- Collaborates with faculty to
design outcome-based information literacy sessions and assesses learning
outcomes per standards.
- Participates in a team-based
approach to develop instructional materials, shares best practices and
pedagogical resources, and conducts assessments of instructional sessions
and information literacy initiatives.
- Connects library patrons
with appropriate information resources; develops and maintains research
guides, videos, and tutorials.-
Provides quick answers and
performs more complex reference work and literature searches as needed.
Functional Responsibility
(35%) (serves as the team lead in one of the
following functional areas)
- Assessment
- Plans, develops, implements, and communicates library-wide assessment programs, initiatives, and strategies that enable continuous review, evaluation, and improvement of services; coordinates projects and supports colleagues engaged in assessment work, ensuring shared actions toward assessment goals.
- Identifies key data to measure the impact of the library’s collections, services, and facilities; coordinates the gathering of library-wide statistics.
- Works collaboratively with others across campus responsible for assessment.
- Emerging and Library/Instructional Technologies
- Remains informed about emerging technologies/industry trends and applies them to operations and activities.
- Acts as the library expert on all Springshare products; serves as the administrator for the Springshare suite, including implementing best practices, documentation, and training.
- Collaborates with university Instructional Designers to learn new tools and functions of the learning management system (Canvas), enabling the development of high-quality instructional library materials.
- Graduate Student Success
- Serves as the liaison to the Graduate Studies Office and the Graduate Students Association.
- Develops, promotes, and delivers targeted workshop series for graduate students.
- Identifies opportunities to enhance library services and support for graduate students.
Additional Functions:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Directs the work of student employees and part-time librarians as needed.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library and information science or related field.
- Three (3) years of relevant professional experience delivering reference and library instruction services; academic or research library preferred.
- Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; strong customer service orientation.
- Proven ability to effectively foster positive working relationships and to collaborate in a team environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer skills, library applications, and experience with information sources and adapting to evolving library trends and technologies.
- The formal education and experience prerequisites may be waived at the university’s discretion if the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
- An additional degree in a STEM discipline.
- Experience in assessment and higher education accreditation (e.g. Middle States, ABET) processes.
- Experience working with graduate or continuing professional students.
- Experience with statistical analysis software and data visualization tools.
