Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Make field inspections of building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical installations for residential, commercial, and multi-family construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
Check plans for original construction or alterations or remodeling to ensure compliance with pertinent codes and accepted engineering practices; issue acceptance or approval of such plans and specifications.
Review plans and applications for building permits.
Confer with architects engineers, builders and the general public in the field and office; explain building code requirements and restrictions.
Maintain inspections or permit file; submit inspection reports as required.
Investigate violations and complaints.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Ability to:
Read, understand and interpret construction blueprints, plans and specifications.
Inspect and analyze standard building construction and identify code violations. Keep accurate records.
Prepare accurate and precise reports.
Work effectively with builders, contractors and the general public.
Stand, bend, sit, kneel, lift, reach and move about quickly and safely in construction projects and business office work locations.
Pick-up, manipulate, move, raise and lower heavy materials, equipment, and supplies; to climb ladders and scaffolding to heights of 30'; to climb onto, walk on and get off of roof structures; to get in and out of tight spaces within approved safety limitations.
Get on and off, or in and out of City equipment; operate the full range of equipment that it typically required of the class without special aides.
Read handwritten, typed or machine generated text, graphical and statistical material without aides other than eyeglasses and, or contact lenses.
Absorb data, learn and apply procedures required to perform the full range of tasks required by typical duties of the class.
Knowledge of:
Approved methods, materials, tools and safety used in building construction.
California Building Codes, Local Zoning Ordinance, and State and County Health Codes.
Provisions of applicable California Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Code.
Provisions of California Energy Code and Green Building Standards Commission.
Qualifications
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:Experience:Two years of experience in Building inspection or three years of journey level experience in construction work and the building trades.Education:Completion of the twelfth grade.License or Certificate: Possession of an ICC B1 and E1 certificate within 12 months of employment is required. Contain of a valid California State Driver's license.
