Ready to Lead and Innovate in Environmental Services? Under the guidance of our Department Director and Assistant Directors, you'll take the helm of the Environmental Services Department’s Support Services Division. Key Areas of Responsibility:
Manage a diverse group of internal functions to support the Department’s mission.
Consistently meet deadlines imposed by other City departments to support their work.
Promote and advance a culture that recognizes safety as an integral component to successfully completing our work.
Plan, manage, and implement program improvements and efficiencies.
Manage and provide oversight of program personnel, contracts, agreements, and systems.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field, and
Five (5) years of professional operations and management experience or five (5) years of professional budgetary/fiscal and/or administrative/organizational analysis experience in a government entity, or
Any combination of education and experience that can demonstrate these qualifications.

The Department pursues waste management strategies that emphasize waste reduction and recycling, composting, and environmentally sound landfill management to meet the City’s long-term waste management needs. The Department has provided refuse pickup for more than 100 years and curbside recycling and yard waste collection for more than two decades. The Department has 610 budgeted positions (FY 2025), a budget of $192 million, and generates more than $88.9 million in revenue. Its business operations and responsibilities highly impact the citizens of San Diego. The Support Services Division facilitates the Department’s delivery of quality environmental programs through the provision of administrative and regulatory support, contracting and fiscal management, intra-department facility maintenance, information systems management, customer service, safety, training and employee development programs. The division functions as a multifaceted resource to the Department, highlighting the commitment to customer and environmental stewardship.
The Clean SD Division is responsible for managing the waste abatement components of the Clean SD Program which includes abatement of homeless encampment abatements, enforcement of citywide solid waste codes, removal of illegal dumping, waste abatements, providing roll-off bin services to City facilities, organizing planned curbside cleanups, removing dead animals in public rights of ways and conducting sidewalk sanitation to protect public health.
The Collection Services Division provides collection and disposal of residential refuse, collection and proper handling of recyclables and organic waste, and collection of litter from street litter containers in business districts.
The Disposal & Environmental Protection Division operates the Miramar Landfill and Greenery. The Division maintains eight closed landfills and eight inactive burn sites; ensures regulatory compliance of the City's underground fuel storage tanks; performs inspections and manages abatements of lead and asbestos in City facilities; and provides public education on lead and asbestos, and disposal services of household hazardous waste.
The Waste Reduction Division is responsible for managing the Non-Exclusive Solid Waste Collection Franchise system, waste diversion programs, zero waste planning, Senate Bill 1383 reporting and compliance, recycling education and technical assistance, and programs for residents and businesses.
