This is technical and supervisory work in all areas of public works operations.
An employee in this class is in general supervisory charge of maintenance crews engaged in highway maintenance, street cleaning, parks maintenance, building maintenance, motor equipment or sanitation services activities.
Works under the general direction of a division superintendent or assistant superintendent with considerable independence in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Characteristic Work
Assigns, coordinates, and supervises either directly or through subordinate supervisors the work of crews involved in patching, ditching, litter cleanup, erecting and repairing fence and guardrail, cleaning equipment, and yard facilities, street flushing, street sweeping, tree trimming, grass mowing, landscaping, building maintenance, equipment repair, garbage collection and disposal, ball park repair, and snow and ice control. Drives to and from job sites to inspect completed work, work in progress, and snow and ice routes. Trains subordinates in all aspects of assigned work, including the safe and efficient operation of relevant automotive and power equipment. Ensures work is performed efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with City standards. Conducts performance evaluations for subordinate employees. Provides technical advice to subordinate supervisors. Establishes priorities of tasks to be performed based on judgment and knowledge of conditions existing at start of shift. Assists in the planning, implementation, and enforcement of City safety guidelines and initiatives. Operates a variety of office equipment such as a personal computer, printer, photocopier, facsimile, and scanner. Maintains records and prepares correspondence using standard and customized business software. Enters and retrieves data utilizing spreadsheets or a computerized work order management system. Responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens, vendors, and supervisors in person, in writing or by phone. Investigates and handles complaints and emergencies. Assists in the supervision of snow and ice control activities, keeps records, and prepares reports. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of five years of paid experience in public works activities, including a minimum of two years of paid experience in the more skilled aspects of such work; or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION OR TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
Thorough knowledge of the procedures, methods, and equipment used in all areas of public works operations. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions relevant to public works operations. Knowledge of City of Akron topography. Knowledge of snow and ice control methods.
Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise a variety of public works operations. Ability to train subordinates in all aspects of the work. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective employee and public relations. Ability to work extended hours and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. Ability to safely operate automotive and construction equipment.

Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades. VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER’S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid commercial driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Commercial Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
