Job Overview
The Deputy Title IX Coordinator and Civil Rights Investigator (“Deputy”) will be responsible for completing the day-to-day responsibilities of a Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Georgetown University, with a particular emphasis on providing support following reports of sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking involving students and employees at the University. Depending upon the volume of sexual misconduct (including Title IX) investigations, the individual will be assigned investigations and reviews of civil rights discrimination and harassment complaints, as well as conducting climate assessments within the University. Civil rights issues may include but are not limited to allegations of discrimination and harassment based on sex, gender, and gender identity (Title IX) as well as race, national origin, disability, religion, and other protected categories covered by the District of Columbia Human Rights Act. The Deputy will also be responsible for conducting proactive workshops and trainings. The Investigator will report to the University’s Title IX Coordinator and Director of Title IX Compliance as well as the Associate Vice President for Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Compliance, and will be housed within the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Affirmative Action (IDEAA).
Work Interactions
The Deputy will work closely with multiple University offices and divisions including Student Affairs, Georgetown University Police Department, Human Resources, and the Office of General Counsel. The Deputy will be expected to act as a neutral party in conducting prompt and thorough investigations of alleged incidents, and will provide a detailed, unbiased report regarding the findings of the investigation as well as an analysis that tracks the applicable policies and legal standards. Among other things, Deputy responsibilities will include:
- Promptly responding to reports of sexual misconduct involving main campus undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff, including sharing resources, providing information on supportive measures and formal complaint options, and offering to meet with those impacted
- Maintaining timely communication with community members, key campus partners, the Title IX Coordinator, and the IDEAA team
- Working with campus partners to make appropriate referrals for support and implementing appropriate supportive measures
- Develop an investigative plan for each complaint
- Interview the complainant, respondent, and potential witnesses
- Gather relevant documentation
- Draft and issue reports of the findings and analysis of an investigation
- Implement and keep apprised of new developments and best practices in Title IX and Civil Rights investigation procedures
- Conduct or assist with IDEAA investigations into allegations of discrimination, harassment, and hostile environment based on protected categories, including age, race, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and national origin
In addition, the Investigator will be responsible for the following:
- Assisting the Title IX Coordinator in maintaining the Title IX and Sexual Assault and Misconduct websites (titleix.georgetown.edu and sexualassault.georgetown.edu)
- Supporting the Title IX Coordinator in organizing outreach programming (such as Office Hours, poster campaigns, newsletters, etc.) with various departments and student organizations on campus
- Conducting Title IX trainings related to an overview of Title IX, support resources available on and off campus, reporting options, the University’s grievance procedures, and employee reporting obligations
Requirements and Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- At least 2-4 years of experience conducting investigations, preferably in the education and/or civil rights arena
- Substantial experience working with diverse populations, including populations of color, the LGBTQ community, and persons with disabilities
- J.D. preferred
- Advanced degree in student affairs, higher education, criminal justice or related field also considered valuable
Beneficial experience will include:
- Familiarity with higher education and student conduct practices
- Experience in, and awareness of, the sensitivity required when interacting with a diverse community on trauma-related topics
- Strong and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
- Expertise in conducting sensitive and confidential investigations
- Demonstrated skill in party and witness interview and investigation techniques
- Ability to produce high quality written work
- Ability to manage multiple shifting priorities under time constraints
- Strong ability to multitask, including managing multiple investigations or reviews concurrently
- Ability to maintain neutrality and establish credibility with broad range of constituents, including faculty, staff, students, law enforcement, and others
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary
