Position Summary:
The part-time Staff Psychiatrist for the Rice Counseling Center provides psychiatric consultations and prescribes and monitors medication, as appropriate, through a hybrid virtual and in-person model for Rice University undergraduate and graduate students who have been referred by the Center’s counseling staff.
The ideal candidate will have a history working with adolescents, understanding of the various challenges high-achieving students face, and a gentle and educational approach to psychiatric care.
Workplace Requirements
This position is offered as a hybrid role at 20 hours per week, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Schedule to be determined upon offer. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range: $115,000 to $120,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
- M.D. degree from an accredited medical college or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from an accredited college
- 2+ years experience working with adolescent, college aged patients
- Certified by the American Board of Psychiatrist and Neurology
- Must be able to practice medicine in the state of Texas
Skills:
- Advanced organizational skills and attention to detail

- Excellent educational approach to working with patients
Preferences:
- M.D or D.O.
- Experience working with Titanium or similar electronic medical record and prescription software
Essential Functions:
- Provides psychiatric services to students, including writing prescriptions and provides diagnoses, therapy and advice, when indicated, for any student with an emotional or psychiatric problem.
- Provides medication education
- Participates as a member of the Rice Counseling Center team and consults with the Center’s counseling staff regarding student therapeutic progress and responds, as necessary, to emergency consultation requests, both during and outside regular scheduled hours at the Center
- Works as an interdisciplinary team member with therapists, wellbeing advisors, the student and their family/guardian to achieve a mutual understanding of care and future steps
- Refers, as appropriate, Rice students to outside consulting services, including hospitalization, notifying the Center’s staff and informing the student that Rice is not under any obligation to purchase or provide such consulting services or hospitalization
- Maintains all student-patient records in accordance with guidelines established by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association and the records policy of the Center, and stores such records in a secured central file at the Center.
- Adheres to and follows guidelines and standards of practice of the organization governing their specialty
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions:
- Provides consultation service to the Office of the Dean of Undergraduates and Office of the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies on masters such as readmissions, withdrawals, and involuntary withdrawals
- Submit statistical data for reports as necessary
