Position Summary | The Coordinator, Nursing Advising & Retention is a full-time, campus-based professional responsible for coordinating and providing academic advising support for students (second year and above) in the undergraduate entry-into-practice (EIP) nursing program. Special emphasis is on providing academic advising for incoming transfer students, as well as providing supplementary advising to students who are not in good standing within the major and are at risk for non-progression or dismissal. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, tracking enrollment, progression, and retention trends in the EIP nursing program, identifying students who may need additional support, and connecting students to support resources. The Coordinator, Nursing Advising & Retention works collaboratively with stakeholders across campus to provide training and resources to support the progression and success of undergraduate Nursing students. The Coordinator serves as a member of the Center for Student Success team and supports events and initiatives as assigned. |
Education/Experience | Bachelor’s degree in counseling, nursing, or a related field, Masters preferred plus five years related experience and/or training preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. |

- Demonstrated ability to use good judgement and work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment, to perform effectively with fluctuating workload, and to meet established deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion, and maintain integrity with handling sensitive and confidential information; operate in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Excellent interpersonal and networking skills to include written and verbal communication, group presentation skills, cultural proficiency, and ability to work with diverse constituencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others and to provide excellent customer service to students and to all members of the campus community.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and be self-motivated and flexible with a strong work ethic.
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying academic policies.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, student records systems, early alert monitoring systems, social media and web communications, and database systems.

Physical Requirements | Light work: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, keyboarding, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions, close visual acuity. Position is part of the School of Nursing and Health Professions and as such has potential exposure to science laboratories, chemicals and chemical processes, biologicals and biological processes, and magnetic field. Requires additional hours for meetings and events, including evenings and weekends. |
Essential Functions | Academic Advising Support - Serve as liaison with the Office of Admissions to review prospective students with regard to direct entry to the Nursing major.
- Provide academic advising for incoming transfer students regarding program requirements and prerequisites, as well as appropriate course selection for their first semester.
- Work collaboratively with the Registrar’s Office to ensure that incoming students have timely and correct evaluation of transfer credits.
- Review transfer credits for possible substitutions, equivalencies, and/or special permissions to be reviewed by the Nursing Program Director and other Academic Program Administrators (APA) as appropriate.
- Ensure that incoming transfer students are connected with the Director, Clinical Education to ensure that they receive appropriate information about clinical placement requirements and deadlines.
- Serve as a liaison between new transfer students and their primary academic advisor to ensure a smooth transition.
- Work collaboratively with primary academic advisors to provide supplementary advising for students who are not in good standing in the EIP Nursing program and/or are at risk for non-progression.
- Connect students to campus resources (e.g., Career Services, Wellness Center, Academic Link Learning Center, Writing Center, Office of Accessibility and Disability Services) and act as a liaison to all relevant internal and external resources.
- Provide training and support for faculty advisors in the Nursing Unit.
- Function as a member of the Center for Student Success team by assisting with campus-wide initiatives related to academic advising and retention.
Student Retention and Success - Monitor the progress of EIP nursing students (second year and above) and ensure appropriate follow-up action with regard to attendance verification, flags on faculty reporting mechanisms, mid-term grades, and registration outreach.
- Per established parameters and procedures, review student performance at the end of each semester to identify and notify students who are not in good standing within the major.
- Work collaboratively with Nursing leadership and other stakeholders to identify students who may need additional assistance preparing for the NCLEX.
- Work collaboratively with the Center for Student Success team to identify and develop initiatives to holistically support student success in undergraduate Nursing.
- Track enrollment, progression, and retention trends in the Nursing Department.
