The City of Lake Forest is seeking a skilled GIS Technician on a part-time basis. The objective of this position is to provide meaningful work experience and equip the individual with the skills needed to compete for similar positions in the workforce. Under general supervision, the GIS Technician will assist, take part in, and perform tasks typically assigned to a GIS Technician in the IT Division.

Examples of Duties

Utilize ArcGIS software to identify, create, and modify geographic data, analyze GIS data using geoprocessing tools, and compose, symbolize, and print maps.
Use various GIS tools to support projects and research in a variety of areas related to local government, such as planning, business development, public works, code enforcement, water quality, stormwater, urban forest management, and public safety.
Research and evaluate data, present facts, conclusions, and recommendations clearly and concisely to department staff, other city departments and agencies, and to the public.
Take part in the development and/or revisions of documentation.
Take part in department studies and special projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, and methods of GIS cartography, spatial analysis, and data management; Office productivity software; effective business communication and correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation; Internet use and research methods and techniques.
Ability to: Update, maintain, and organize information; operate and use computers; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in work; use good judgment in analyzing situations carefully and adopting effective courses of action; evaluate and prioritize user requests and needs; analyze software applications and evaluate user needs; maintain confidentiality of materials, vital records, and other information; understand and follow oral and written directions and policies; organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: A valid Class C California Driver’s License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. GIS Professional (GISP) certification or equivalent designation is desirable.
Education/Training/Experience: A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from a two-year college with a degree or emphasis in geography, software engineering, public administration, business administration, or a related field and two to four years of increasingly responsible related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
