Position Information
Arlington County's Department of Libraries is seeking a Library Assistant Coordinator to organize and coordinate the work of assistants, temporary staff and volunteers to ensure the successful operation of the Central Service Desks unit at the Central Library. In addition, this position will provide direct public assistance at the Central Circulation desk to customers of all ages and various cultural backgrounds and rotate as Central Point of Contact on select evenings and weekends.
Specific duties include:
Reviewing employees' completed work for conformance to established competencies and general work standards;
Performing supervisory duties to include recruiting and hiring Library Assistants, Pages, temporary staff and volunteers and preparing performance appraisals;
Approving timecards, and submitting payroll information;
Training employees in use of computer systems and library procedures such as shelving, general library policies and Central Library operations;
Managing and performing the circulation workflow of library materials and providing information to patrons regarding policies and procedures, checking in/out materials, issuing and updating library cards;
Providing reference and reader's advisory services and technology assistance;
Providing information to patrons about programs offered throughout the library system and the availability of equipment and facilities use;
Participating in system-wide committees to develop policies, goals and work plans of library service;
Monitoring temporary budget expenditures; and
Collecting fees and fines for late, damaged or lost library materials.
The ideal candidate will have:
Strong conflict resolution skills;
Ability to adapt in environments of frequent shifting priorities and needs;
Aptitude to self-start and motivate; and
Desire and passion for providing and modeling high quality customer service and teamwork.
Selection Criteria
Minimum: An associate's degree or two years of college, and considerable library experience in general library procedures OR a combination of some experience in general library procedures and experience providing direct customer service in a library environment.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Desirables: Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
Experience scheduling multiple shifts, supervising or coordinating a team;
Strong customer service and communication skills to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse population;
Proficiency in Spanish; and/or
Proficiency with computer applications, including but not limited to office software (MS Office).
Additional Information
The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.
This is a full-time, forty hours per week position, and will include some evening and weekend work.
This vacancy is located at Central Operations, 1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington.
Ability to push full book carts and lifting items weighing up to 20 pounds.
