Overview
Princeton University Library is seeking an Islamic Manuscripts Project Cataloger to join its Cataloging and Metadata Services team (CaMS) for a part-time, three-year term position. CaMS is a multidisciplinary group of talented individuals working collaboratively to support the research of the Princeton University community. This includes providing efficient, thorough, and accurate access to the Library's holdings in many formats and languages.
Princeton University Library is one of the world's leading research libraries, supporting a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 85 thousand manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images.
The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities.

Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Metadata Services, the Islamic Manuscripts Project Cataloger creates complex, original descriptive metadata for Islamic manuscripts, most of which are digitized for the Library's digital repository, and is also responsible for significant enhancements to records for digitized Western manuscripts. The Project Cataloger responds to user-generated requests and error reports and resolves descriptive and holdings problems. In addition, the Project Cataloger serves as a consultant for manuscript cataloging in other languages, creating documentation and providing training in manuscript cataloging to other PUL staff. In addition, the Project Cataloger enhances structural metadata for the digitized manuscripts, ensuring they are displayed properly in Digital PUL.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
Excellent reading knowledge of Arabic
M.L.S. or M.A. degree, along with experience cataloging manuscripts in an academic library setting
Experience applying ALA/LC Romanization tables
Strong technical skills
Demonstrated ability to meet production deadlines and work collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications:
Scholarly or bibliographic work with pre-modern Islamic manuscripts
Familiarity with classical Islamic texts and paleography
Familiarity with AMREMM, LCSH, and library systems (e.g., OCLC, Alma)
NACO experience
ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience in a research library setting
