The College Office serves the undergraduate population of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. The College works closely with about 60 departments and programs to offer majors and minors, supports roughly 1,200 instructional staff and promotes the value of the liberal arts to an undergraduate population of roughly 6,500 students.

DUTIES:
The Assistant Director for Advising Services and Academic Support serves as a core member of the academic crisis management team (CaseNet) that coordinates services and programs for students in academic or personal difficulty including providing support and referrals, and assistance with communications. CaseNet members directly and proactively support students experiencing challenges that can impact academics via crisis response, case management, and referrals. The CaseNet team provides specialized academic advising, guidance on time away from and returns to school, and support regarding academic standing. Provide advice, clarification and interpretation of the rules, regulations and procedures of the College and other University divisions to students, parents, faculty members, and to external constituencies. In addition, this team member will participate in the Working Groups that organize the College Office’s efforts to maintain and improve its administrative functions.

The main duties for this position include:

• Act as a case manager; provide short and long-term support for students experiencing acute and ongoing academic, wellness, and personal challenges, including students who are on academic probation and students who are taking time away from and returning to school.

• Provide advice, clarification, and interpretation of the rules, regulations, and procedures of the College and other University divisions to students, family members, faculty and staff members, and to external constituencies. Manage school communications and administration regarding leaves of absence and returns from time away; provide status updates to faculty, advisors, and students.

• Support CaseNet’s data monitoring projects such as Course Action Notice reporting.

• Contribute to advising education efforts, meetings, conferences and special events with partner offices and national higher education organizations.

• Conduct data analysis projects; collaborate with senior staff in implementing College-wide assessment initiatives designed to enrich advising and case management.

• Notify faculty and relevant campus partners of student emergencies; as appropriate, request that faculty offer extensions, make up exams, and/or other allowances for academic obligations.

• Participate in the activities of one or more of the advising working groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education – Bachelor's degree required, Masters in a related field (Higher education, counseling, social work) preferred

• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.

• Understanding of and appreciation for a liberal arts curriculum.

• 3-5 years’ work experience preferred, directly supporting students experiencing academic and personal challenges, as well as handling sensitive information.

• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines required.

• Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team required.

• Substantive experience working with complex web applications, enterprise-level FileMaker Pro solutions, Microsoft Excel,

• Microsoft Word, calendaring, email, and web browsers. Eagerness to grow technology skill set and a passion for new projects and challenges.

• Have a demonstrated record of working sensitively and effectively with students from a wide range of backgrounds.
