Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, drive a Type I and Type II school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route; perform regular vehicle safety inspections; maintain assigned buses in a clean and safe operating condition; maintain a variety of records.

Job Summary
Drive a Type I and Type II school bus to transport students to and from school, field trips and athletic events, in accordance with established routes, time schedules, district policies and procedures; maintain bus in a clean condition; perform related duties as assigned.
Responsible To and Evaluated By: Administrator of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation
Class Characteristics
Positions allocated to this class typically provide safe transportation from a neighborhood pick-up site to school and return. Incumbents also transport students on educational and other authorized trips. Some positions in this class may be assigned to drive special education students in specially equipped buses from home to school and return.
Examples of Duties
· Drive a school bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules
· Operate a two-way radio to maintain communication with dispatcher's office
· Pick up and discharge students, including disabled children; oversee the loading and unloading of students; ensure safety belts and harnesses are securely fastened; escort students across streets and roadways when necessary
· Inspect bus prior to operation for safety purposes; clean windshield and headlights; clean interior and exterior of bus; service bus with gas and oil; report needed mechanical repairs
· Maintain appropriate behavior among students on buses; follow district policy regarding student control and contact with parents and the public; resolve disputes; assist supervisor in contacting principals regarding disciplinary problems
· Maintain a variety of records including mileage, routing, maintenance and time schedules
· Attend meetings, programs, and inservice training as assigned
· Perform basic First Aid in accordance with district policies and procedures
· When not involved in school bus activities, may perform custodial, gardening, painting, clerical, minor maintenance and delivery tasks
· Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
Employment Standards

Training and Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Training: Equivalent to high school graduation.
Experience: Two years of experience operating a motor vehicle.
Knowledge of: Safe driving practices and emergency procedures; provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code, and California Highway Patrol's School Bus Driver's Handbook applicable to the operation of a School Bus and the transportation of children; first aid principles and practices.
Ability to: Drive a school bus safely and efficiently; operate a two-way radio; maintain order among students; recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate actions; administer first aid to ill or injured students; maintain simple records; react with and exercise good judgment, flexibility, and sensitivity to changing situations and emergencies; understand and carry out oral and written directions; communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
Physical Requirements: Vision sufficient to read road signs; hearing sufficient to hear sirens and normal conversation; speech sufficient to speak in an understandable voice; stamina sufficient to sit for long periods of times; manual dexterity sufficient to operate school bus doors and operating equipment; physical strength sufficient to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid California School Bus Drivers' Certificate and Medical Examiner's Certificate. Possession of First Aid and CPR Certificate.

Valid California “S” endorsement.
