Position Description
General Description:
Assists with the Harris County Veteran Services Department’s Suicide Prevention Program, providing coordinated care for Veterans identified as high risk for suicide. Assist Veterans who are dealing with crisis’s situations; homelessness, justice involved, or other issues. Further, assist the Veteran and family members through education of benefits and available resources. Coordinates care through community partners and Veteran Affairs to connect clients with mental health, housing, legal, or other necessary resources as needed. Completes follow-ups with clients as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Respond to Veteran’s dealing with suicidal ideation by providing crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment and safety plans for Veterans via phone and in person
Assess, document, educate, and complete referrals for Veteran clients who are in need of stability planning by case management and coordination with community partners for; mental health treatment, housing, legal assistance, food, and other needs
Educate Veterans about their benefits and complete referrals to the VBA/VSO team, request needed documentation for clients to include DD-214's, NG-22's and other vital records through community partners to increase the Veteran’s quality of life
Assist and screen incarcerated Veterans helping them with their exit planning to include making referrals to the Veteran Treatment Court for those Veterans who qualify
Participate in community outreach events
Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements
Education:
Associate degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field
Experience:
Experience working directly with Veterans and government/nonprofit organizations who focus on Veteran concerns or issues
Have worked with Veterans and understand military culture
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Great personality with a “can do” attitude, able to work independently and flexibly
Extensive knowledge of Veteran resources with genuine desire to care for Veterans
Able to work on a diverse team, using strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and oral/written communication skills
Able to work with a diverse population and without bias towards people regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, veteran status, gender/identity, or socio-economic background
Able to handle intense situations and display sound judgement and good decision-making skills
Must have strong commitment in client’s rights to self-govern and create their own choices and goals while also being an advocate for them
Must be computer literate with MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.) and Internet proficiency required
Must be able to take the TB test
Must be able to successfully pass the CPR and AED certification and administer to those in need
Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices
Licensure:
Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferences

General Information
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
Non-Exempt/ Regular
Typical hours are from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday
Some Weekends and Reverse Schedule when performing crisis intervention (some evening phone calls) or weekend events
Work Environment:
The work is mostly in an office or outside environment
Will be occasional local travel to complete job functions, training, meetings
Veteran crisis response/follow-up, etc.
No special safety precautions are required.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 50lbs
Must be able to stand for more than 7 hours a day
Must be able to handle hot and humid conditions
Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
