Harris County Resources for Children and Adults was founded in 1966 as the Harris County Child Welfare Board to provide support services for the children taken under the wing of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Fifty years later, Harris County Resources for Children and Adults still provides this support. But the now-county department has expanded services for early prevention, intervention, and adult services.

Youth Service Specialist Overview:
Under the supervision of the Community Youth Service (CYS) Supervisor, and in collaboration with area school districts and other governmental entities, the Youth Service Specialist provides school-based crisis intervention/prevention and case coordination services for at risk students and their families.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides crisis counseling and case management services to at risk students and their families.
Provides linkage to community-based resources and school-based services.
Networks with new and established community resources to increase knowledge of services.
Prepares and maintains comprehensive, accurate and timely case documentation in the database.
Promotes and markets Community Youth Services (CYS) services (including presentations) to school staff and community members.
Provides summer programming activities for youth in assigned school district.
Provides crisis debriefing as member of district crisis response team as needed.
Communicates with Community Youth Services (CYS) supervisor and district liaison as required by needs of program and schools.

Requirements
Education:
Bachelor's degree majoring in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or Counseling.
Experience:
One (1) year of continuous full-time paid work experience providing direct crisis counseling and case management services to youth and families.
Training and experience using a personal computer with a variety of software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and any visualization software.
Licensure:
Reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license (Texas) and auto liability insurance
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Effective written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of community resources in Harris County for youth and how to access them
Must possess case management and documentation skills
Must be self-disciplined and dependable
Demonstrated ability to work with adolescents
Be detailed-oriented
Maintains strict confidentiality
Works independently with little or no supervision
Handles stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
Recognizes and respect appropriate personal boundaries
Be self-motivated and possess excellent time management skills
Prioritizes tasks
Deals with diverse populations and complex situations involving community agencies, schools, clients and staff, Establishes positive working relationships with agencies having differing philosophies.
Experience with documentation in client data systems.
Must be able to conduct home visits.
Must have knowledge of adolescent problems and stages of development.
Experience with documenting service provision electronically.
