Summary:
We’re looking for a creative, thoughtful editor to help lead a team of enterprise reporters focused on key Bay Area beats – from science and the environment to education and transportation. As an assignment editor on our Focus team, we want you to lean into the most important stories of the day and also lead the step-backs on the stories that will make an impact on our communities. You should have a keen eye for great stories and the ability to inspire veteran reporters while coaching emerging journalists. The Focus team uses data to enrich the narrative and metrics to help inform its choices. Join us in reimaging what’s possible in a quickly changing news environment. Help us inform the readers of our two daily newspapers – The Mercury News and the East Bay Times – and a website that reaches the world.
Must be located in the South or East Bay Area and work at least three office days weekly in San Jose and/or Concord.
What you will do:
Manage journalists with a wide range of experience and talent to produce quick hits for our websites, centerpiece stories for the front page and expansive pieces that delight readers with beautiful writing
Provide strong, thoughtful editing, often on deadline, for a sophisticated print audience that appreciates excellent reporting, balanced perspectives and a regional focus.
Collaborate with other news leaders across the newsroom and provide leadership across departments in pursuit of excellence.
Use metrics to inform coverage and guide reporters and editors.
What you will bring:
3+ years of experience as an editor
Excellent news judgment and a drive to compete under deadline pressure
Strong organizational and planning skills
A university degree in journalism or a related field
In our diverse region, facility with a second language is a plus

The wage is $75,000 to $80,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
