Typical Tasks
Interviews, selects, orients, and trains staff;
Plans, schedules, and supervises the work of Janitors, Utility Workers, and others to keep buildings and areas clean, orderly, and safe;
Directs janitors and utility workers in the cleaning of public buildings, the preparation of rooms for meetings, event set-ups and take-downs, office moves, and the performance of minor building repairs;
Performs routine inspections to review work in progress and/or upon completion;
Conducts walk-throughs and inspects buildings and areas to determine the need for cleaning, pest control, and for reporting of safety issues or minor building repairs;
Initiates and assigns work orders for maintenance and building repairs;
Orders, maintains, and issues supplies, materials, and equipment;
Maintains electronic and paper records;
Monitors attendance and work schedules, approves leave requests, and enters and maintains timesheets;
Conducts regular staff and safety meetings, ensuring staff's compliance with policies, procedures, and safety standards;
Contacts or meets with customers regularly to establish service levels, understand and fulfill janitorial needs, or resolve concerns before they escalate to complaints;
Meets with facility or department managers to investigate or solve personnel or operational problems;
Trains and educates subordinate and interdepartmental staff in the procedures and operations of the waste diversion program;
Initiates Workers Compensation Reports and arranges for work accommodations;
Performs annual performance evaluations of staff;
Conducts counseling and any disciplinary actions to enforce policies, procedures, and regulations;
Uses standard office software programs and equipment as well as automated systems to enter/retrieve information and to track work orders;
Establishes and maintains effective communications and relationships with staff, clients, management, and vendors;
Meets with contractors, obtains quotes, establishes minor contracts, and oversees contract work;
Serves as a subject matter expert to management and other county agencies;
May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
Performs other related duties, as required.
Employment Standards
Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to possession of a High School diploma. Relevant work experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis
and
Three (3) years of janitorial or facilities services experience with one (1) year of lead, supervisor, manager or director experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a Janitorial, Environmental Services, Hospital Housekeeping, and/or Facilities setting. The janitorial or facilities services experience may be inclusive of the lead, supervisor, manager, or director experience.
Completion of 60 semester (90 quarter) units from an accredited college or possession of an Associate's degree is highly desirable.
Special Requirements
Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
Some positions may require security clearance prior to appointment that must be maintained during employment.
Knowledge of:
Methods, use, and care of supplies, materials, tools, and equipment used in janitorial and/or groundskeeping work;
Janitorial and building maintenance requirements, codes, standards, policies, procedures, and regulations, including those pertaining to the health and safety of employees and building occupants;
Supervisory principles and practices, including work scheduling and providing instruction to workers regarding specific tasks;
Inventory requirements and control;
Standard office practices, procedures, and office machines;
Basic computer applications, as well as electronic timekeeping and payroll systems;
Principles and practices of customer service, effective training, supervision, and personnel management;
Green cleaning practices and products.
Ability to:
Interview, select, orient, and train staff;
Oversee staff who operate tools and equipment used in janitorial and/or groundskeeping work;
Communicate, in English, clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
Plan, assign, inspect, supervise, and evaluate the work of staff;
Identify maintenance and repair needs and ensure that they are resolved;
Problem-solve and make effective decisions;
Test and evaluate products and equipment;
Use standard office software programs, equipment, and automated systems;
Keep accurate electronic and paper records;
