GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Department Head reports to the Assistant Superintendent 7-12. The position is in accordance with terms outlined in the Stratford Administrators’ Association (SAA) contract.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrates leadership in all aspects of the department.
Coordinates or serves on district curriculum committees.
Participates in the development and articulation of the English and Social Studies curriculum.
Coordinates the implementation of the high school English and Social Studies curriculum.
Participates in the interview process for teaching candidates at the discretion of the Principal/Asst. Superintendent.
Identifies staff development needs within the department.
Assists in preparing an annual budget for the department.
Coordinates the student selection of courses within the department.
Maintains an inventory of department supplies and equipment.
Assists with the supervision and evaluation of department staff.
Responsibilities also extend to the feeder middle school.
Teach up to two English classes
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Connecticut Educator Certificate, (105) or (092) as well as current state teaching certification (English 015).
Thorough knowledge of English / Social Studies methodologies and teaching techniques
Master’s Degree in secondary education in addition to graduate study in the subject area, or a Master’s Degree in English with graduate work in secondary education
Successful teaching experience on the secondary school level
The ability to work cooperatively with staff and to exercise leadership in the supervision of staff and the development of curriculum
The ability to organize the department so that the needs of pupils and teaching of subject matter will be interwoven in the most effective manner
Superior oral and written communication skills
High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity
Strong work ethic

COMPENSATION
The salary for this position is determined in accordance with the provisions of the current administrator contract.
